Paddleboarding on the sea brings a different experience to flat water paddling, with changing conditions, gentle swell, and opportunities to explore sheltered coastline routes. This full-day beginner course is designed to help paddlers build the foundations needed for safe and confident sea paddleboarding in a supportive coastal environment.
Beginning close to the beach, the session starts with equipment fitting, a safety briefing, and an introduction to basic paddleboarding techniques. Early exercises focus on balance, efficient paddling, turning, and getting comfortable handling the board in sheltered sea conditions.
Once confidence builds, the day progresses into a short coastal journey where participants can practise their new skills along a sheltered section of coastline. Along the way, instructors introduce gentle swell, small waves, and the environmental factors that affect paddling decisions on the sea.
Rescue techniques and self-recovery exercises are also included, helping paddlers become more confident getting back onto the board after a fall and assisting others if required. Throughout the day, coaches provide practical feedback and guidance tailored to individual confidence levels.
Courses are usually based around Tenby South Beach or nearby sheltered coastal areas chosen to provide suitable learning conditions away from stronger wind and swell.
Locations are selected carefully according to tides and weather forecasts to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for beginner sea paddleboarding. Final meeting details are confirmed at least 48 hours before the session.
No previous sea paddleboarding experience is required to join the course. Complete beginners are welcome, along with paddlers wanting to improve confidence and develop better technique in sheltered coastal conditions.
Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable spending a full day outdoors on the water. Confidence around water is helpful, particularly during rescue exercises and coastal paddling sections.
Local knowledge of the Pembrokeshire coastline allows coaches to select sheltered locations that provide ideal learning conditions for sea paddleboarding progression. Sessions are led by Paddle UK-qualified coaches and coastal leaders with extensive experience teaching on both sheltered and open water.
Practical coaching, small group teaching, and adaptable session planning help create a relaxed environment where paddlers can steadily build confidence on the sea. Equipment is carefully maintained and chosen to suit beginner and improver paddlers alike.
