Enjoy a relaxed family paddle along the Milford Haven Estuary with a shoreline tour led by a qualified instructor. Starting from Milford Marina, this guided session offers a safe and enjoyable way to explore the area by kayak or paddleboard, with stories of the region’s past adding interest along the way.
After arriving at Milford Marina, your instructor will provide a full safety briefing and ensure all safety gear is correctly fitted before heading out. You’ll set off from the shoreline when tides are suitable—sessions are not run within 1.5 hours either side of low tide—so do check the tide tables in advance. The water here is relatively sheltered, making it a good environment for beginners and younger paddlers under close supervision.
The guided shoreline tour takes your group along a section of the Milford Haven Estuary, revealing a mix of natural beauty and historical features. Your instructor will point out key landmarks along the route, from the remains of coastal military defences to evidence of the area’s industrial past. There are also local tales to be shared, including stories of Viking visitors. It’s a peaceful, interesting route with opportunities for conversation and questions, and the pace is tailored to the group’s confidence level. Expect around 60 to 90 minutes on the water depending on weather and tide conditions.
This session takes place on the Milford Haven Estuary, launching from Milford Marina which overlooks Milford Beach. The estuary is known for its calm waters at suitable tides, making it ideal for family-friendly paddling.
You’ll be within a short walk of the waterfront’s amenities including toilets, parking, and places to eat or relax before or after your activity. Please allow a little extra time for arrival and briefings.
Participants must be at least 8 years old and confident in the water, although swimming ability is not essential as buoyancy aids are provided and must be worn at all times. Under-18s must be accompanied by their own parent—each child must have their own parent present, even when joining as part of a wider family group.
If you're unsure about the supervision requirements, especially if your child wishes to bring a friend, please contact the team in advance for clarification. The rules are in place to meet legal safeguarding requirements and to make sure everyone is properly supported during the activity.
This well-established centre is based right on the Milford Waterfront, offering direct access to the calm, scenic waters of the estuary. Sessions are delivered by qualified staff who are trained in first aid, water safety, and safeguarding, ensuring a secure environment for families.
All equipment is provided, and safety briefings are included with every hire. Staff carry VHF radios for emergency support and are experienced in recovering users and equipment when needed. You’ll be supported every step of the way by a friendly, knowledgeable team that puts safety and customer experience first.
The minimum age to take part is 8 years old. However, children under 18 must be accompanied by their own parent or legal guardian. This means that if a child wants to bring a friend, that friend must also bring their own parent. It’s not sufficient for one adult to supervise multiple children who are not their own.
This is in place for both safeguarding and legal responsibility reasons. If you're unsure whether your family group meets the supervision requirements, it's always best to contact the centre beforehand for clarification to avoid disappointment on the day.
No, you do not need to be a confident swimmer, but you should be comfortable in the water. All participants must wear a buoyancy aid at all times, which will keep you afloat in the unlikely event that you fall in.
The water is relatively calm around Milford Marina during appropriate tide windows, and the session is closely supervised by instructors trained in rescue and recovery. If you have any specific concerns, feel free to speak to the team before your session.
Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting wet—light layers and quick-drying materials are ideal. Avoid jeans or heavy fabrics that hold water. Footwear such as wetsuit shoes or old trainers that can stay securely on your feet is recommended.
Wetsuits are not included but can be hired as an optional extra if preferred. Bring a towel and a full change of clothes for after the session, especially if you’re planning to stay around the marina afterwards.
Shoreline tours are only offered outside of a 3-hour window surrounding low tide—specifically, not within 1.5 hours either side of it. This is because the water level around Milford Beach becomes too shallow for safe paddling during that time.
Before booking, please check the local tide tables and choose a time that works with the suitable tidal window. If in doubt, the centre can help you identify the best time to book your session.
Sessions may be postponed or cancelled if weather conditions are unsuitable, including high winds, thunderstorms, or poor visibility. Safety is always the top priority.
If a session is cancelled due to weather, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund. You'll be contacted as early as possible, so make sure your contact details are correct when you book.
