Barafundle Bay sits along the limestone from Stackpole Quay, and this 2.5 hour sit-on-top tour follows that line. A short brief on the slip covers paddling and staying with the group, then the route follows caves and cliffs as the tide allows. Kayaks, paddles, buoyancy aids and wetsuits are included, and a guide stays with you the whole way.
Practise a few strokes in the harbour before the guide sets the line. A short loop if it is windy, or a longer stretch towards Barafundle if it is calm. Nobody is left to find their own way around the headland.
The start moves with high tide, and we confirm the time the day before. Give yourself 15 minutes at the quay. Anyone under 18 needs an adult on the water. Shoes that can get wet stay on in the kayak.
Drive past the cottages, up the hill, and turn right at the long red gate into the large car park above Stackpole Quay, SA71 5LS. Walk down to the slip. What3words for the quay is bongo.opened.piano.
The paddle works along the cliffs towards Barafundle Bay when the swell allows. The lanes and the car park get busy in summer, so leave extra time.
First paddles are welcome on this quay start. You should be happy on the water. Children from 8 can join. Anyone under 18 needs an adult with them.
Swimwear, a towel, a warm dry layer and shoes you are happy to get wet. Tell us any medical notes that affect time on the sea.
National Trust cliffs and a short carry from the car park sit behind this route. Guides have paddled this stretch for more than 20 years and hold ISA and beach lifeguard awards. Sessions are AALA licensed.
Sit-on-tops are stable for first-timers, and the guide stays with the group. Kit is fitted at the slip, then the rest of the 2.5 hours is on the water.
Drive into Stackpole, go past the cottages on the left and head uphill. Near the top, turn right at the long red gate into the large car park, then walk down to the slip at Stackpole Quay, SA71 5LS.
Give yourself 15 minutes before the start. The lanes and the car park get busy, so leave extra time.
About two and a half hours from the quay and back, including a short brief and time on the water. Most of that window is spent paddling rather than standing on the slip talking.
Give yourself 15 minutes at the quay so changing does not eat into the paddle. The start sits around high tide, and we confirm the time the day before.
Stackpole Quay, SA71 5LS. Drive past the cottages, up the hill, and turn right at the long red gate into the large car park. Walk down to the slip. What3words for the quay is bongo.opened.piano.
The lanes and the car park get busy in summer, so leave extra time. If the start has to move with the tide, we send the new time.
A sit-on-top kayak, a paddle, a buoyancy aid and a wetsuit, fitted at the quay. We match the craft to your size. Children can share a double with an adult when that fits better.
Leave phones and bags in the car. If someone needs medication on the water, give it to the guide at the start.
No. First paddles are welcome. You should be happy on the water and able to follow a simple instruction. The guide shows you how to paddle and how to stay with the group before you leave the slip.
If you have paddled before, say so at the brief. The route can take in more cave time when the swell allows.
Eight. Anyone under 18 needs an adult with them on the water. Children should be happy sitting in a kayak and getting a bit wet.
Tell us ages so we can put the right craft out. The pace stays with the least confident person, so a mixed family still works, just at a calmer speed.
Swell on the cliffs matters more than rain. We move time or hold the start when this stretch is unsafe, or if we cannot run a useful paddle from the quay.
Check your messages the evening before if you are travelling a long way, so you have the confirmed start before you leave.
Swimwear, a towel, a warm dry layer, sunscreen and shoes you are happy to get wet. A water bottle helps. Get changed into swimwear before you arrive if you want to skip the queue.
Flip-flops are fine for the walk down to the slip. Leave valuables in the car. Pack a bag for wet swimwear afterwards.
Happy in the sea is the bar. The kayaks are sit-on-tops, so you stay on the water rather than inside a closed cockpit, but you can still get wet.
A buoyancy aid is included and a guide stays with the group. If someone is very nervous, say so in advance so we can keep them closer to the quay at the start.
The limestone cliffs run from the quay towards Barafundle Bay. On a calm day the route can look into caves and along clear water under the headland.
The exact line follows wind, swell and tide. We confirm the plan the day before so you know whether it is a short harbour paddle or a longer stretch towards the bay.
Yes, as long as everyone is eight or over and happy on the water. The pace stays with the least confident person, so mixed ages still work on the same tour.
An adult needs to stay with anyone under 18. Tell us numbers and ages so we can put singles and doubles out at the quay.

Leon was an amazing instructor
Hi, thanks it was great, 5 stars, great teacher. Cheers, Sarah
Our booking was at midday for 2 hours, but we didn’t get the stuff until 12:15 when the lady came back with the surf school. We were then told to bring the stuff back before 2 pm or she wouldn’t be there (we needed to get our deposit back). This…
Got some surfboards and wetsuits for a couple of hours. They were dropped off at the right place right time, he was very helpful and knowledgeable, gave us a little info about the beach because we hadn't surfed there before. Will definitely be using again and recommending
We enjoyed our kayaking thoroughly. Much thanks to Jenny who supported our ride plan and made changes accordingly. Big cheers to her 👏🏻🙌🏼
