What is the RYA?

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the UK national governing body for sailing, windsurfing, motor cruising, powerboating and related watersports. It sets training standards, publishes syllabi and certifies instructors so that a Day Skipper in Cornwall means the same thing as a Day Skipper in the Solent.

RYA qualifications are recognised worldwide. Training centres run courses on yachts, dinghies, ribs, windsurf boards and wingsurf kit, but the structure is consistent: shorebased theory where needed, then practical skills on the water with an RYA instructor.

Choosing an RYA course

Match the course to the craft you want to use, not just the badge that sounds impressive. Dinghy Level 2 does not qualify you to drive a rib; Day Skipper Theory does not replace practical miles on a yacht. If you are unsure, leave a comment when you book and the centre will confirm prerequisites and what is included.

RYA Training Centres set their own prices, boat types and schedules. adventuro shows where you can book; the centre confirms local tidal windows, kit hire and whether theory can be done online before you arrive.
