The Stage 1 course is all about getting young sailors comfortable and confident on the water. The syllabus is designed to be practical, engaging, and age-appropriate. Here's what a typical course covers:
Course delivery is flexible and adapted to the local sailing environment. Some sessions may include games or short journeys to consolidate skills. The emphasis is always on fun, participation, and building confidence.
All practical sessions are supported by short onshore briefings and debriefs. Children are encouraged to ask questions and reflect on what they’ve learned. At the end of the course, participants receive a certificate and logbook entry, recognising their progress within the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme.
Completing RYA Youth Stage 1 opens the door to a world of water-based adventure. Graduates will have the confidence and skills to sail a dinghy under supervision in light winds and calm conditions. They'll understand basic sailing theory, know how to steer and control the sail, and be able to assist with launching and recovering a small boat. More importantly, they’ll start to develop the decision-making and awareness that are central to safe sailing.
After Stage 1, young sailors are ready to move on to Youth Stage 2, where they will build on their skills and begin to sail more independently. Some centres may also offer fun races, kids’ sailing clubs or holiday camps to help cement what they've learned. With each stage, children grow in confidence, capability and independence on the water. And remember, adventuro lists hundreds of RYA courses and sailing sessions to help you find the right next step.
The Youth Stage 1 course usually takes around 2 days to complete, with approximately 10–12 hours of teaching time. This can be spread over a weekend, two consecutive days, or a series of after-school or holiday sessions depending on the centre’s programme. Check with your chosen provider on adventuro for exact timings.
RYA Youth Sailing Stage 1 is an entry-level course designed to introduce young sailors to the basics of the sport. Assessment is continuous and informal, based on your child’s participation and progress throughout the course. Instructors will observe and guide sailors as they learn to rig and launch a dinghy, steer and turn the boat, and understand basic wind awareness. There’s no formal test or exam—just lots of hands-on learning and encouragement. At the end of the course, the instructor will award the Stage 1 certificate if the sailor has demonstrated a confident grasp of the fundamental skills. The course is usually run over two days, with all activities tailored to be engaging, safe, and age-appropriate. You can book this course through one of adventuro’s trusted RYA centres listed on our site.
