Certification
Certification
Commercial Certificate of Competence is how recreational RYA qualifications become legal paperwork for paid work on British-flagged small commercial vessels. You do not take a separate mystery course called "commercial". You hold an RYA Certificate of Competence such as Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore or Advanced Powerboat, then add a commercial endorsement through the RYA with medical, sea survival, first aid and Professional Practices and Responsibilities in place.
The CoC exam itself is practical and oral: passage planning, seamanship and boat handling under scrutiny from an RYA examiner. Commercial endorsement is application paperwork proving you meet MCA code requirements for the category of waters you intend to work in. Kill cord habits matter in the exam. Examiners notice sloppy briefing culture before you leave the pontoon.
Medical fitness ENG1 or ML5, sea survival and category-appropriate experience gates apply. Leave a comment when you book with target MCA code category and certificates already held.
