RYA Competent Crew is the five-day liveaboard course that turns complete beginners into useful hands on a cruising yacht. No prior experience is required, though many sailors arrive after Start Yachting or a few dinghy sessions. You live aboard, learn sea terms and parts of the boat, handle sails and ropes, steer under supervision, keep lookout, and absorb fire precautions, man overboard drills, meteorology and the unwritten manners of life at sea.
Recommended age is twelve. Days are long but satisfying: you might sail twenty to forty nautical miles, stand a night watch, and discover that the kettle is the most important galley equipment on board. If you have done Start Yachting, some centres compress Competent Crew to three or four days. That is not a shortcut on skills, just less repetition of what you already know.
When you finish, the RYA standard says you are able to become a useful active crew member aboard a cruising yacht. That opens flotillas, friend’s boats and the pathway toward Day Skipper Theory and practical skippering later. Seasickness and tiredness are part of the week; instructors have seen it all before.
You will use more kettle than spinnaker on some passages. That is normal on a training week.
Competent Crew is assessed continuously on the water throughout the liveaboard week. There is no written exam.

Five days is standard, often continuous. Some schools run three weekends or three days plus a weekend. With Start Yachting completed, three or four day versions may be available. Weather may reorder the timetable; flexible return travel avoids stress on the last day.
Night sailing and mileage vary by route and weather. Flexibility is part of liveaboard training.
No written exam. Assessment is continuous and practical while you live aboard. Instructors observe sail handling, steering, safety knowledge and crew reliability. RYA Recognised Training Centres teach to the same syllabus even when boats and scenery differ.
You may discuss meteorology and rules ashore, but certification depends on what you do on deck.
Shared cabins, limited privacy, early watches and marina showers. It is sociable, tiring and the fastest way to learn how yachts work day to night. Ask about instructor ratio and boat type when you compare dates on adventuro.
Leave a comment when you book if you need single-berth accommodation ashore some nights. Not all schools offer it, but many try to accommodate.
Soft bag, layered clothing, waterproofs, non-slip deck shoes, sleep kit, towel, seasickness remedies and headtorch for night watches. Sailing gloves optional but popular. If your experience is non-standard, a short comment on booking saves time on day one.
Your centre sends a detailed kit list. Pack light; laundry options are limited at sea.
Many Competent Crew courses include night sailing or a watch system so you experience steering in the dark. Exact plans depend on weather and mileage requirements. Coastal and inland venues both work when the school teaches to RYA standards.
If night sailing is essential for your goals, leave a comment when you book to choose a school that prioritises it.
Crew on cruises, flotillas and club boats, then study Day Skipper Theory while building sea miles toward practical skippering. Pack for cold spray even in summer; British sailing rewards dry socks afterward.
Some sailors repeat Competent Crew as mileage weeks before Day Skipper Practical. Your instructor can advise timing.
Recommended age twelve. Some centres accept younger sailors on family courses with a parent aboard. Your centre sends a kit list after booking; read it before you buy new gear.
Leave a comment when you book for teenagers or children so the school confirms berths, lifejackets and watch participation rules.
Many crew begin nervous. Instructors introduce deck work gradually, keep lifejackets on when required and assign tasks that build confidence before long passages. Many students book the next module at the same school to keep momentum on the pathway.
Leave a comment when you book about your concerns. A good school will pair you with a patient instructor and sensible early routes.
adventuro lists RYA Competent Crew courses on the Solent, Scottish lochs, Cornwall and abroad. Compare boat size, cabin layout, mileage and whether food is included. Matching the venue to the water you will use afterward makes the certificate more useful.
Choose a venue whose waters you hope to cruise later. Familiar tides and harbours make Day Skipper easier when you return.
