RYA Start Yachting is a two-day introduction to sailing on a cruising yacht for people with no prior experience. You learn the yacht itself, ropework, life underway, rules of the road, man overboard recovery, clothing and equipment, emergency precautions and basic meteorology, all while living briefly aboard or day-sailing from a marina. It is gentler than jumping straight into Competent Crew, but more immersive than standing on a dinghy pontoon.
Recommended age is eight, though centres set their own limits. You will steer under supervision, handle lines, and discover that yachts move slowly until they do not. Seasickness happens; instructors know the signs and would rather you go below than heroically cling to the rail in silence. That is normal on day one.
By the end you should have experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and awareness of safety on board. Start Yachting shortens a later Competent Crew course to three or four days at many centres if you continue soon after. Leave a comment when you book if you are nervous on bigger boats or have never slept afloat.
Start Yachting is assessed continuously on the water. There is no written exam.

Find activitiesIt is a two-day introduction to cruising yachts for beginners. You cover the yacht, ropework, sailing underway, rules of the road, man overboard recovery, clothing, emergency equipment and basic meteorology. Check the adventuro listing for what kit hire and logbook fees include before you pay.
You leave with experience steering, handling sails and understanding safety on board, not a full crew qualification yet.
No prior sailing experience is required. Dinghy sailors are welcome but the course assumes you have never been on a yacht before. Centres on adventuro answer common questions quickly if you leave a comment when you book.
Leave a comment when you book if you only know small boats so the instructor can translate your existing skills without skipping safety basics.
Two days according to RYA guidance. Centres may run consecutive days over a weekend or weekdays, sleeping aboard or returning to marina each night. Weather may reorder the timetable; flexible return travel avoids stress on the last day.
Check the listing for liveaboard versus day-sail format. Both teach the same syllabus with different evening routines.
Many beginners feel queasy on day one. Instructors watch for symptoms, keep the first sails short and may assign tasks on deck where horizon is visible. RYA Recognised Training Centres teach to the same syllabus even when boats and scenery differ.
Leave a comment when you book about seasickness history. Centres can suggest medication timing, wristbands and cabin strategies before you arrive.
No. Assessment is practical and continuous on the water. Your instructor signs off when you have met the Start Yachting outcomes. Ask about instructor ratio and boat type when you compare dates on adventuro.
Short weather discussions happen organically; there is no classroom paper test on a two-day taster.
Soft bag with layers, waterproof jacket, non-marking shoes, sleep kit if living aboard, and any seasickness remedies you use. Towel and toiletries for marina showers. If your experience is non-standard, a short comment on booking saves time on day one.
Avoid hard suitcases. Yacht cabins are generous on hospitality, less so on floor space.
Recommended age eight per RYA guidance. Centres may set higher minimums or require a parent aboard for younger children. Coastal and inland venues both work when the school teaches to RYA standards.
Leave a comment when you book for family groups so the centre can confirm cabin layout and child lifejacket sizes.
Start Yachting is a shorter taster. Competent Crew is the full five-day liveaboard course that makes you a useful active crew member. Pack for cold spray even in summer; British sailing rewards dry socks afterward.
If you have done Start Yachting, many centres complete Competent Crew in three or four days instead of five when you continue promptly.
Some centres run liveaboard weekends; others return to marina hotels or homes each night. The syllabus is the same. Your centre sends a kit list after booking; read it before you buy new gear.
Leave a comment when you book if sleeping afloat is a concern. Shore-based accommodation options exist at many schools.
It feels bigger and tilts differently, but speeds are often slower and you have more handholds. Instructors introduce heel gradually and explain what is normal. Many students book the next module at the same school to keep momentum on the pathway.
Nervous beginners are common. Two days is enough to discover whether you love yachts or prefer dinghies without committing to a week afloat.
adventuro lists RYA Start Yachting at coastal schools and some inland venues with access to large lakes. Compare liveaboard format, boat size and instructor ratio. Matching the venue to the water you will use afterward makes the certificate more useful.
Pick a location you might cruise again. Familiar waters make Competent Crew less overwhelming later.
