Overview

The Balearic Islands sit in the western Mediterranean at something close to the optimal position for sailing: far enough south for reliable summer conditions, close enough to the Spanish mainland to be easily reached, and varied enough — four main islands, each with its own character — to sustain a week or a month of cruising without repetition. Mallorca is a serious sailing destination in the European sense; Menorca is quieter and arguably more beautiful; Ibiza and Formentera provide the island-hopping finale that most Mediterranean sailing dreams are built around.

Mallorca: the sailing capital

Palma is the centre of gravity. The marina complex at Palma stretches across much of the bay and is one of the largest and best-equipped in the Mediterranean — international charter fleets, RYA sailing schools, chandleries and everything else you might need. The Tramuntana mountain range runs along the north-west of the island, creating dramatic scenery and local thermal effects that give interesting wind variations. A circumnavigation of Mallorca — typically five to seven days — is one of the finest coastal passages in the Mediterranean: limestone cliffs, sea caves, tiny fishing villages accessible only from the water, and anchorages that justify everything you went through to get there. The north-west coast between Port d'Andratx and Sa Calobra is the highlight.

Menorca: quieter and calmer

Menorca lies 35nm north-east of Mallorca and is the Balearics' most authentically Balearic island — less developed, more protected (it's a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) and with a south coast series of turquoise bays that are genuinely extraordinary from the water. The north coast faces the Tramontana wind and gets rough; the south coast, sheltered from the north, has coves that barely see a ripple. Mahón harbour, at the east end of the island, is one of the largest and deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean — genuinely spectacular on arrival by sea.

Ibiza and Formentera

Ibiza's sailing is less discussed than its nightlife but no less enjoyable. Es Vedrà — a sheer volcanic rock rising 400m from the sea — is one of the most dramatic sailing landmarks in the Mediterranean. Formentera, a 15-minute sail from Ibiza, has shallow turquoise waters above white sand that look implausibly Caribbean and some of the clearest sea water in the Balearics. The passage from Ibiza to Formentera and back makes an excellent day sail.

RYA courses and qualifications

Mallorca in particular has established RYA-recognised sailing schools offering Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and qualifying-mile passages. Mediterranean sailing is slightly different from UK waters — significantly less tidal range (30–40cm vs the Solent's 4m+), more thermal wind patterns, anchorage rather than mooring-heavy navigation — and is excellent preparation for Adriatic, Atlantic or offshore passages. Local wind patterns: what to know

Understanding the Balearic wind system is part of what makes sailing here so enjoyable once you've worked it out. The Embat (thermal sea breeze) fills in by mid-morning in settled summer weather, giving 10–15 knots of reliable afternoon sailing. The Tramontana blows from the north and north-west — moderate in summer but can be fierce in spring and autumn. The Levante from the east brings warm air and can build significantly, particularly in the Menorca channel. Spring and autumn see more varied conditions; summer is the most settled and predictable season for passage making.

When to sail the Balearics

The main season runs April to October. June–September has the most settled conditions, warmest water and longest days. May and October are excellent for those who prefer quieter anchorages, lower charter prices and more moderate temperatures. August fills the marinas and anchorages — budget and book ahead, or choose Menorca which remains calmer than Mallorca even at peak season.

Yes — the inter-island passages are established sailing routes well within reach of Day Skipper-level sailors. Mallorca to Menorca is around 45nm (a comfortable overnight or early-start day passage); Ibiza to Formentera is 15nm; Mallorca to Ibiza is 100nm (a longer passage requiring overnight or two days). Local charter companies advise on routing for the season and conditions.

In summer, the Embat (thermal sea breeze) fills in by mid-morning and gives 10–15 knots of reliable afternoon sailing. The Tramontana from the north can be stronger and more disruptive, particularly in spring and autumn. The Levante from the east can build to gale force on occasion. Summer is the most settled season — more predictable than UK coastal waters in most respects.

Yes — RYA Start Sailing courses in the sheltered bays near Palma are an excellent introduction. Warm water, reliable breeze and clear conditions make it a more forgiving learning environment than most UK options. Several RYA-recognised schools operate in Mallorca and Ibiza.

For bareboat charter (without a skipper), you need RYA Day Skipper or equivalent, an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and evidence of sufficient sea miles. Skippered charters require no qualification. For motor yachts, the ICC requirements are slightly different — check with your charter company.

Palma, Mallorca for the largest charter fleet and best infrastructure. Mahón, Menorca for a more authentic, quieter experience in one of the Mediterranean's finest natural harbours. Ibiza if you want the island-hopping to Formentera as your main focus.

Flotilla sailing involves a small fleet of yachts sailing together with a lead boat that provides daily briefings, technical support and social events. It's an excellent way to gain experience and confidence on a longer passage without sailing entirely alone — safety in numbers, without the restriction of a skippered charter.

Comfortably five to seven days, allowing time to anchor in the best coves and explore ashore. A faster circumnavigation in two to three days is possible but misses the point of the Mallorcan coastline — the north-west in particular demands slow progress and several anchorages.

Yes — skippered charters put you on a fully crewed yacht with a qualified local skipper. You can participate in sailing the boat as much or as little as you like. It's an excellent way to experience the sailing without the responsibility of navigation and boat handling.

The main practical differences: the Balearics have almost no tidal range (30–40cm vs the UK's 4–6m in many locations), so pilotage is less complicated but anchoring requires less tidal calculation. Wind patterns are more thermal and predictable in summer. Anchorages are available where UK sailing would rely on marinas. The distances between ports are greater.

November to March is off-season — many marinas and anchorage facilities close, weather is less predictable and some charter fleets are unavailable. The Tramontana can blow hard in winter and create rough conditions particularly around Mallorca's north coast.
