Mallorca pairs Mediterranean sailing, diving and powerboating with dramatic limestone coves, making it one of Spain's great year-round watersports playgrounds. Charter a yacht or RIB around the Balearic coastline, learn to scuba dive in clear blue water, try jet skiing and wakeboarding off the resorts, or join a guided boat tour to secluded calas. With operators for complete beginners through to certified divers and skippers, the largest of the Balearic Islands rewards every kind of adventurer.
Mallorca has been a serious sailing destination since long before sailing became a lifestyle brand. Palma's marinas hold some of the most impressive yachts in the world in summer, but the island is equally accessible to those who are just finding their sea legs: sheltered learning bays, a well-established RYA sailing school network and a coastline varied enough to reward months of exploration without repetition. It earns its reputation.
The island's 550km of coastline divides naturally into four sailing zones with distinct character. The north-west coast — from Port d'Andratx up to Cap de Formentor and along to Sa Calobra — is the most dramatic and the most rewarding: limestone cliffs rising sheer from clear water, tiny fishing coves with a handful of mooring buoys, and anchorages that require a nervy approach through narrow rock channels. The anchorage below Sa Calobra's Torrent de Pareis — accessible only by sea or a long hike — is one of the finest in the Mediterranean. The south coast between Palma and Cala d'Or is more sheltered, with several convenient anchorages, easy beach access and the old town of Alcúdia at the north-east end of the island. The east coast (Porto Cristo, Cala d'Or, Porto Colom) has calm, clear water and easy anchorages in converted fishing harbours. Circumnavigation — typically five to seven days — is the best way to see all of it properly.
Palma's marina complex is one of the largest and best-equipped in the Mediterranean: full-service boatyards, international chandleries, a highly competitive charter fleet and multiple RYA-recognised sailing schools operating from purpose-built facilities. The Bahía de Palma to the south of the city is sheltered from the Tramontana and offers excellent conditions for beginner courses and dinghy sailing. Palma also has direct flights from most UK regional airports, making it one of the easiest Mediterranean sailing destinations to reach.
The established RYA pathway is well-served in Mallorca. Start Sailing beginner courses run in the sheltered bays near Palma; Day Skipper practical (the most popular intermediate course) is available as a five-day live-aboard programme, putting you on passage between ports around the island. Mallorca is particularly popular for Yachtmaster qualifying miles — a circumnavigation of the island plus a return passage to mainland Spain or a crossing to Menorca covers useful offshore distance in varied conditions. The ICC (International Certificate of Competence) required for chartering in Spanish waters can be obtained at several schools.
Bareboat charter (self-skippered) requires RYA Day Skipper or equivalent plus logbook evidence of sufficient experience; the charter company will conduct a competency check before handing over keys. Skippered charters are available for those who want to enjoy the sailing without the navigation responsibility — a local skipper who knows the anchorages and the weather adds considerable value on an unfamiliar coastline. For those wanting just a taste of Mallorca from the water, day sails from Palma or Port de Sóller take in cliffs, sea caves and coves that are genuinely inaccessible from land.
The dominant summer pattern is the Embat — a thermal sea breeze from the south-west that fills in by late morning and eases at sunset, typically giving 10–15 knots of reliable afternoon sailing. Mornings are often calm and suitable for motor-sailing to an anchorage before the breeze arrives. The Tramontana blows from the north and can be brisk in spring and autumn; in summer it's usually moderate. June to September is the most settled sailing season; May and October offer better value and quieter anchorages with occasional stronger conditions.
