Perfect for first-time paddlers, these beginner SUP lessons focus on building confidence in calm sheltered water while teaching the fundamentals of stand up paddleboarding. Using stable boards and step-by-step coaching, the session helps participants quickly learn how to balance, paddle and manoeuvre safely on the water.
The lesson begins at the harbour base where participants meet the instructors for a safety briefing before getting fitted with winter wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets and paddles. Once changed, the group heads to the shoreline for a short land-based introduction covering board positioning, paddling basics and safety around the water.
After the initial briefing, the lesson moves into the sheltered waters of Newquay Harbour where participants begin practising balance, paddle strokes and turning techniques under instructor guidance. The calm conditions allow beginners to progress steadily while building confidence on the board at their own pace. Instructors provide individual coaching throughout the session, helping participants improve posture, control and efficiency while learning how to paddle comfortably in a straight line.
As confidence grows, the session introduces flat water manoeuvres and longer paddling sections around the harbour area. The atmosphere stays relaxed and supportive, making the lesson suitable for complete beginners, families and anyone looking to try paddleboarding for the first time. Returning to shore, there’s time for a debrief before heading back to base for showers and changing facilities.
Newquay Harbour offers one of the best beginner paddleboarding environments in the area thanks to its sheltered water and protected launch points. The calmer conditions allow participants to focus on learning techniques without dealing with stronger currents or surf.
Located close to beaches, cafés and coastal walks, the harbour also provides easy access to facilities including parking, changing rooms and showers. The surrounding scenery creates an enjoyable setting for learning while staying away from busier open water conditions.
No previous paddleboarding experience is required for this lesson. The session is designed specifically for beginners and introduces all techniques gradually through step-by-step coaching in sheltered water.
Children aged 5 to 11 must be accompanied by an adult during the activity. Participants should feel reasonably comfortable around water and prepared for light physical activity.
Using years of paddleboarding and watersports coaching experience, the team focuses on making beginner lessons approachable, enjoyable and easy to follow for all ages. Small coaching groups and sheltered teaching conditions help participants build confidence quickly while still having plenty of time out on the water.
Mel brings extensive experience within paddleboarding and coastal activities, helping guests choose suitable sessions while ensuring everything runs smoothly from arrival through to the end of the lesson. Operating directly from Newquay Harbour also gives access to ideal beginner teaching water throughout the year.
