Bodyboarding is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to build confidence in the sea while learning how waves work, making it a great introduction to wave riding for both children and adults. Taking place on Fistral Beach in Newquay, these lessons focus on wave control, paddling technique, positioning, and improving confidence in the water through fun and active coaching sessions.
Lessons begin beside the beach with introductions, equipment fitting, and a briefing covering ocean safety, bodyboard positioning, and basic wave awareness. Instructors explain how to paddle correctly, catch white water waves, and control the board before participants head into the sea. With smaller and lighter equipment than traditional surfboards, many beginners find bodyboarding easier to pick up quickly.
Once in the water, coaches work closely with the group to help improve timing, confidence, and wave positioning. Beginners often start catching waves within the first part of the session, while more experienced riders can focus on improving control, trimming across the wave face, and developing manoeuvres. Group sizes remain small, with a maximum of 8 participants per instructor, allowing regular feedback and support throughout the lesson.
As confidence grows, participants begin learning how to generate speed across the wave and improve their movement through the water. More experienced riders may also work on techniques such as duck diving, turning, and paddling out more efficiently. Sessions are designed to feel active, approachable, and enjoyable for a wide range of ages and abilities.
Fistral Beach is one of the UK’s best-known surf beaches and provides ideal conditions for bodyboarding thanks to its reliable waves and spacious sandy shoreline. The beach is well suited to both first-time wave riders and returning participants looking to improve their confidence in the sea.
Situated in Newquay on Cornwall’s north coast, the area is known for its strong watersports culture, coastal scenery, cafés, and beach atmosphere. Lessons meet directly beside the sand within the International Surfing Centre, helping maximise time in the water with very little walking involved.
Bodyboard lessons are suitable for participants aged 8 and above, including complete beginners with no previous experience. A basic level of water confidence is recommended, and participants should ideally be able to swim at least 25 metres independently.
Younger children or less confident swimmers may benefit more from a private or family-focused session where instruction can be adapted more closely around individual needs and confidence levels.
Sessions are delivered by qualified instructors with extensive experience teaching in the sea safely while helping participants progress at a comfortable pace. Coaching focuses on building confidence, improving technique, and making lessons enjoyable for both complete beginners and returning riders.
Direct access onto Fistral Beach allows more time in the water and less time carrying equipment across town or along the coastline. Facilities including changing rooms, hot showers, secure storage, and quality bodyboarding equipment help create a smooth and comfortable experience throughout the session.
Lessons are based directly on Fistral Beach, with the meeting point located inside the International Surfing Centre beside the large pay and display car park. Being positioned right by the sand means there is very little walking involved with equipment, so more time can be spent in the water.
When you arrive, head to the hire and lesson area at the beachside complex and aim to check in around 20 minutes before your lesson start time. This gives enough time to get changed, collect equipment, and meet your instructor before heading onto the beach.
Many beginners find bodyboarding slightly easier to learn because the boards are smaller, lighter, and ridden lying down rather than standing up. This often helps participants gain confidence in the waves more quickly during their first session.
Bodyboarding is also a fun sport in its own right, with riders able to generate speed and ride waves in different ways compared to traditional surfing.
No previous experience is needed to join beginner bodyboard lessons. Sessions are designed to introduce participants to wave riding gradually while teaching the key skills needed to control the board safely.
More experienced bodyboarders can also join to improve their technique and receive feedback from instructors on paddling, positioning, and manoeuvres.
Participants should bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and drinking water for the session. Comfortable beach clothing is also useful before and after entering the water.
All bodyboarding equipment needed for the lesson is included, including wetsuits and the board itself.
Yes, group bodyboard lessons are suitable for children aged 8 years and above who feel comfortable in the water. The smaller boards and close-to-the-water riding style can make bodyboarding particularly enjoyable for younger participants.
Children under 8 or less confident swimmers may be better suited to a private or family session with more tailored instruction.
Group lessons operate with a maximum of 8 participants per instructor. This smaller ratio allows coaches to spend more time giving individual feedback and helping participants improve throughout the session.
Keeping groups manageable also helps create a safer and more relaxed environment in the water.
