This lesson is for surfers who have the basics down and want to get beyond the white water. With a maximum of five students, you'll work on new skills such as paddling out, unbroken wave selection, board control, turning and refining your pop-up, with the aim of catching your first green wave. Whether you want that first unbroken wave or to tidy up your technique out the back, this is the group session for you.
Your lesson starts the moment you arrive. We'll check in with you, calm any nerves, understand what you want from the session and get you in the right mindset, then kit you out in a wetsuit, pair you with a board and walk you to the beach. On the sand your instructor will read the conditions with the group, recap the fundamentals and set out the more advanced work on positioning and pop-up.
In the water you'll put that beach work into practice with plenty of one-to-one coaching through our Focus Sessions. Your instructor spends two or three wave blocks with you on one skill or problem, so you move on faster. Expect detailed feedback, plenty of encouragement and a fair bit of laughter, plus a local discount on coffees, hot chocolates, pastries and ice cream on the day.
Lessons take place at Watergate Bay, known for its wide, soft sandy shoreline and consistent waves. It's a local favourite and a brilliant spot for beginners and more experienced surfers alike.
It's an easy short drive from Newquay town centre, with parking, toilets, cafes and restaurants nearby so you can make a proper day of it away from the busier town beaches.
You should be 11 or over, have previous surfing experience and feel comfortable paddling independently in deeper water. You should be able to stand on your board consistently in white water (around 8 out of 10 attempts) and have a basic sense of how to control the board.
If you're unsure whether this lesson is the right fit, get in touch and we'll help you choose.
Adam and Gemma run this as a couple-owned surf school, and they set out to build a session around empathy, professionalism, knowledge and fun. They take your time in the water personally, and their goal is to make this the highlight of your trip to Cornwall.
Our hand-picked instructors create a positive, supportive environment and treat every lesson as a chance to keep you surfing long after you leave. Super-small groups, longer one-to-one time, well-kept kit and exclusive local discounts are all part of that.
You'll meet us at Watergate Bay, about a minute from our HQ in Newquay Bay Resort and around 10 minutes from Newquay town centre. That's where we kit you out and walk you down to the sand.
If conditions mean we need to move the lesson, we'll give you plenty of notice so you can get there without a rush and still have time to change.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your lesson so we have time to check you in and get you into a wetsuit. That buffer also gives us a chance to talk through what you want to work on before you walk to the beach.
On weekends, school holidays and sunny days, give yourself extra time for traffic and parking around the bay. The closest car parks fill quickly when the weather is good.
We sit on The Green, opposite Wax Beach Bar and next to the council car park. Just Park Wallet can sometimes save you a little on the council spaces if you book ahead.
There's more parking opposite Watergate Bay Hotel and on the southern cliff overlooking the bay if the closest car park is full. Allow a short walk down to the beach from those overflow spots.
Arrive in swimwear with slip-on shoes so changing into a wetsuit is quick. We provide the wetsuit and board, and boots in the cooler months, so you do not need to bring your own kit unless you prefer to.
Bring sun cream, water, a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards. If you want a shower after the session, bring some change for the machines on the beach.
We can look after your car keys while you surf, which is usually the simplest way to keep the vehicle locked. There is not a locker room for bags or valuables at the beach base.
Leave other belongings locked in your vehicle before you come down to the sand. Wet kit and a towel are easier to manage if you keep the rest of your day bag in the car.
We surf in the rain. A wet day often means better waves, and you'll be in a wetsuit anyway, so a shower rarely spoils the session.
We only cancel if the beach is red-flagged or we decide conditions aren't safe. If that happens, we'll reschedule you or refund the lesson so you are not left without a plan.
You're welcome to wear your own wetsuit, though we may still suggest one of ours depending on how thick it is and how cold the water feels. Our suits are chosen for the lesson and the time of year.
If you'd like to use your own surfboard, message us on Adventuro chat before the day so we can check it suits the session. Improver work often needs a board that still gives you enough stability as you start catching unbroken waves.
This session is for surfers who already stand consistently in the white water and want to work beyond it. You should be comfortable paddling independently in deeper water and have a basic sense of board control.
The minimum age is 11, and groups are capped at 5 students per instructor. If you are still working on standing in white water, the beginner lesson is the better starting point.
Your booking covers around 2.5 hours including getting ready, a qualified instructor, a wetsuit, a surfboard and changing facilities. In the cooler months we also include wetsuit boots.
Groups are capped at 5 students per instructor so you get more one-to-one time than a standard lesson. Towels, swimwear, food, parking and transport are not included.
Focus Sessions are how we coach in the water. Your instructor spends two or three wave blocks with you on one skill or problem, rather than shouting the same tip at the whole group from the shore.
That extra attention is why we keep this class to five students. You get detailed feedback on the next wave, then the instructor rotates so everyone in the group still gets their turn.
