This two-hour beginner lesson at South Fistral is for ages 8 and up, with a board and wetsuit included. You'll cover ocean safety and the pop-up on the sand, then practise catching waves with a qualified instructor in a group of no more than eight. Whether it's your first time or you want to tidy up the basics, you'll leave with a solid foundation and more confidence in the water.
Your session will begin with a warm welcome and an introduction to the basics of surfing. The instructor will explain ocean safety, wave selection, and how to handle your board both in and out of the water. You'll then move onto dry land practice, where you'll learn how to pop up on your board and position yourself correctly to maintain balance.
Once in the water, you'll put your new skills to the test with the instructor guiding you every step of the way. They'll provide hands-on coaching to help you catch your first waves and stand up confidently. Throughout the session, you'll receive personalised feedback to help improve your technique. By the end of the lesson, you'll have a solid understanding of surfing fundamentals and feel more comfortable in the ocean.
Lessons take place at South Fistral, one of Newquay's best beaches for learning to surf. The sandy shoreline and consistent waves make it an ideal spot for beginners, with plenty of space to practise and instructors close at hand. You'll meet us on the grass in front of Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa, just to the left of the decking.
Look out for our smoke green surfboards on the grass so you can find us quickly. Parking can be hard to find in Newquay, so leave plenty of time. If South Fistral is full, Atlantic Road car park and Pentire Headland car park are a short walk away.
No prior surfing experience is needed, and we provide a board and wetsuit for the session. Lessons are open to ages 8 and above, and you'll be in a group of no more than eight so your instructor can stay close and give you plenty of feedback.
You should be able to swim 25 metres and be free from any medical issue that would make surfing unsafe. Arrive wearing swimwear under your clothes, bring a towel, water and suncream, and come ready to learn.
