These kids surfing lessons are designed to introduce children to surfing in a safe, encouraging, and enjoyable environment while helping them gain confidence in the water and learn new skills step by step. Based directly on Fistral Beach in Newquay, the sessions combine beach instruction and water time with experienced surf coaches who specialise in teaching children of different ages and abilities.
Children begin the lesson beside the beach with introductions, wetsuit fitting, and a fun safety briefing covering the basics of surfing and ocean awareness. Coaches explain how to carry the board safely, position themselves in the water, and catch beginner-friendly waves before moving onto standing techniques. Sessions are designed to feel active and encouraging while helping children build confidence steadily throughout the lesson.
After practising techniques on the sand, the group heads into the sea to begin catching white water waves with instructor support nearby. Lessons combine coaching with plenty of water time, allowing children to learn through repetition while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable. Coaches give regular feedback throughout the session while helping participants improve balance, timing, and board control at a comfortable pace.
As confidence develops, young surfers begin linking the different skills together more naturally, from paddling and wave catching through to standing and riding towards shore. Sessions are designed around progression while making sure children enjoy the experience and feel supported throughout their time in the water.
Fistral Beach is one of the UK’s best-known surfing beaches and provides excellent conditions for beginner surf coaching thanks to its spacious sandy shoreline and reliable waves. The beach offers plenty of room for younger surfers to learn safely while remaining close to the shoreline during early sessions.
Located on Cornwall’s north coast, Newquay is recognised for its beach lifestyle, coastal scenery, and strong surf culture. Lessons meet directly beside the beach within the International Surfing Centre, allowing children to get into the water quickly without long walks carrying equipment.
Group kids surf lessons are suitable for children aged 8 years and above who feel reasonably confident in the water. Participants should ideally be able to swim at least 25 metres independently before joining a group session.
Children under the age of 8 or less confident swimmers may be better suited to a private or family surf lesson where instruction can be adapted more closely around their individual confidence and ability level.
Children’s sessions are taught by qualified beach lifeguards and experienced surf instructors with extensive experience working with younger surfers in the sea safely. Coaching focuses on creating a supportive environment where children can progress gradually while still keeping the lessons enjoyable and engaging throughout.
Direct access onto Fistral Beach allows more time in the water and less time organising equipment or walking to the shoreline. With changing rooms, secure storage, hot showers, and quality surf equipment all available on-site, the overall experience is designed to feel straightforward and comfortable for both children and parents.
