This two-hour beginner lesson at Holywell Bay is for ages 8 and up, with a board and wetsuit included. You'll start on the sand with safety and the pop-up, then practise catching waves with a qualified instructor in a group of no more than eight. The bay is a calm, sandy setting that suits first-timers and anyone who wants a clearer grip on the basics.
The session begins on the sand with an introduction to the conditions and a clear explanation of how the lesson will run. Your instructor will cover essential safety points, including awareness of waves, other surfers, and correct board handling. You'll then work through key movements on land, allowing you to practise body positioning and standing up before entering the water.
After heading into the sea, the focus shifts to applying those skills with close guidance from the instructor. You'll be supported as you paddle for waves, with regular feedback to help you adjust your timing and stance. As confidence builds, you'll spend more time riding waves and refining your technique, with breaks as needed. By the end, you'll have a clear understanding of surfing fundamentals and feel more at ease in the ocean.
Sessions run at Holywell Bay, a broad sandy National Trust beach just outside Newquay that offers plenty of space for learning. The open bay and gentle contours of the shoreline make it a practical setting for beginner surf lessons, with shallow water that often suits first-timers and families.
We are based at Parkdean Holywell Bay Holiday Park, only a short walk from the beach. Parking is usually available next to the surf school in the campsite, and we will send exact meeting instructions once your booking is confirmed.
No previous surfing experience is required. Lessons are open to ages 8 and above, and we supply a board and wetsuit so you just need to arrive ready to learn. Groups stay at no more than eight people per instructor so you still get plenty of attention in the water.
You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim 25 metres. Wear swimwear under your clothes, bring a towel, water and suncream, and let us know before the session if you have a medical condition we should be aware of.
We take a focused, friendly approach to surf coaching, keeping groups small to ensure proper attention in the water. Instructors are fully qualified and experienced in teaching beginners, adapting each session to the conditions and the group's progress.
Emphasis is placed on safety, clear instruction, and gradual improvement. Each lesson is structured to help you leave with practical skills, confidence, and a better understanding of how to continue surfing beyond your first session.
