Overview

Sailing on the west coast of Scotland is one of those experiences that people who've done it bring up in conversation long after the fact. The Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Sound of Jura, the Firth of Clyde and the sea lochs reaching deep into the Highlands together form one of Europe's finest cruising grounds: unpredictable weather, exceptional anchorages and an absence of the marina congestion that defines sailing in the Solent.

The sailing grounds

This is not the easiest sailing in Britain. Tidal streams in the Inner Hebrides can be strong; weather changes quickly; passage-making here requires navigation confidence and a yacht set up for the conditions. Loch sailing

For those new to sailing, the sea lochs and inland lochs are the obvious starting point. Loch Long, Loch Fyne and Loch Lomond offer protected water with consistent breeze and no significant tidal concern. West coast cruising

Multi-day cruising on the west coast passes some of the most remote islands in Britain. Anchorages like Loch Tarbert on Harris, Loch Scresort on Rum and the bay at Tobermory are memorable in ways that marinas full of gin palaces are not. Skippered charters are available for those wanting the experience without holding formal qualifications; RYA training passages are available for those building their sea miles.

When to go

June through September offers the best combination of light, accessible weather and usable tides. Midges are a consideration in sheltered anchorages from June to September; a light breeze makes them disappear. Even in summer, carry adequate warm clothing — conditions change fast and a night at anchor in a sea loch can be brisk.
