Created for confident paddlers and experienced water users, Monster SUP surf sessions take the giant shared paddleboard out into the surf for wave riding, teamwork and plenty of laughs along the way. Combining paddleboarding, surfing and group coordination, the experience offers a completely different feel compared to standard SUP lessons.
The session starts at the harbour base where participants meet the instructors, receive a safety briefing and get fitted with winter wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids and paddles. Once changed, the group heads down to the beach for a warm-up and paddle drills before launching into the sheltered water near the harbour to practise coordination and manoeuvring on the 8-man Monster SUP.
After warming up, the session gradually moves into the surf zone where the focus shifts towards catching and riding waves together as a crew. Timing, teamwork and communication become essential as the group works together to paddle into incoming waves while the instructor guides the board from the rear. Unlike traditional surfing, the aim is not individual performance but enjoying the shared experience of riding what the team calls “party waves” together.
Between wave attempts, instructors continue coaching the group on paddle technique, positioning and balance in moving water. Expect plenty of wipe-outs, laughs and repeat attempts as the group builds confidence in the surf throughout the session. Once back on shore, there is time for a debrief before returning to base for showers and changing facilities.
Newquay Harbour provides an ideal launch point for Monster SUP surf sessions thanks to its sheltered access and nearby surf conditions. Starting within calmer harbour water allows instructors to introduce drills safely before moving towards suitable surf zones depending on the swell and tides.
The surrounding coastline is well known for its surfing conditions, making it a great environment for group wave riding experiences. From the water, participants get a unique perspective of the beaches and cliffs while working together to navigate the surf.
This session is aimed at participants who have either completed a flat water Monster SUP session previously or already have surfing or paddleboarding experience. Confidence in open water and basic paddling ability are important before progressing into the surf environment.
Both group and private sessions are available, with private bookings requiring a minimum of four participants. All participants must be aged 12 years or above.
Having developed these sessions through years of surfing and paddleboarding experience, the team focuses on creating a session that feels energetic, social and challenging while maintaining safe coaching throughout. The combination of group surfing and paddleboarding creates a completely different atmosphere compared to standard surf lessons.
Mel’s experience across paddleboarding and coastal activities helps guests choose the right level of session while ensuring groups feel supported and well prepared before heading into the surf. Operating directly from Newquay Harbour also allows instructors to adapt locations according to the day’s conditions.
Monster SUP surfing uses a large shared stand up paddleboard designed for group wave riding. Instead of surfing individually, participants paddle together as a team to catch and ride waves on the same board.
The experience combines surfing, paddleboarding and teamwork while creating a more social and relaxed atmosphere than standard surf lessons.
Yes, participants should already feel comfortable paddleboarding or have completed a flat water Monster SUP session before joining the surf session. The activity takes place in moving surf conditions and requires a basic level of paddling confidence.
Experienced surfers and SUP users usually settle into the session quickly once they become familiar with the larger shared board.
Surf conditions can be more physically demanding than the calmer flat water sessions, especially when paddling through waves and balancing in moving water. The higher minimum age helps ensure participants are confident enough for the activity.
Private sessions still maintain the same minimum age because of the surf environment involved.
“Party waves” are waves ridden together as a group on the Monster SUP. Instead of one person surfing alone, the whole team paddles together to catch the wave at the same time.
The shared experience often creates plenty of laughs, wipe-outs and memorable moments during the session.
Participants should expect an active session involving repeated paddling, balancing and climbing back onto the board after falls. Surf conditions can also make the session more tiring than flat water paddling.
The instructors pace the session carefully while offering guidance and rest periods between wave attempts where needed.
The Monster SUP used for surf sessions is an 8-man board designed for group paddling and surfing experiences. Everyone works together while the instructor helps guide the board into position.
Team coordination plays a major role in successfully catching and riding waves together.
