Where to surf in Cornwall

The north coast is the engine room, with the most reliable surf:

Fistral, Newquay — the UK's most famous break and a buzzing surf-school hub; punchy on its day, so often best once you've found your feet.
Watergate Bay, Polzeath & Perranporth — wide, sandy, gently sloping beaches that are ideal for beginners and families.

Lesson, coaching or board hire?

Never surfed? A group lesson is the best — and cheapest — way to start: you'll get a wetsuit, a soft foam board, a safety briefing and a qualified instructor, and most people are riding waves to the beach by the end. Already surfing? Private or small-group coaching will fast-track you onto green (unbroken) waves and tidy up your technique. Confident in the water? Board and wetsuit hire lets you chase the best beach on the day. Cornwall is also home to multi-day surf camps and surf-and-yoga retreats if you'd rather immerse yourself for a weekend or a week.

When to go & what to wear

You can surf in Cornwall every month of the year — it's all about the wetsuit. May to September brings the warmest water (around 15–18°C) and the most beginner-friendly conditions, when a 3/2mm suit is plenty. Autumn serves up the cleanest, most consistent swell of the year. In winter the water drops to 8–10°C, so you'll want a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit, boots and gloves — but you'll often have the line-up to yourself. Whatever the season, check the surf and tide forecast and surf at lifeguarded beaches (RNLI patrols run roughly Easter to October).
