If you're looking for a surf lesson that really focuses on teaching you to surf, and not just stand, this is the one. It's ideal if you're new to the water, need a refresher, or just want some fun in the white water, and we'll work through the fundamental skills you need to start surfing independently. With a smaller group than the industry standard, you'll get plenty of one-to-one time so you progress faster and stay safe.
Your lesson starts the moment you arrive. We'll check in with you, see how you're feeling, calm any nerves and get you in the right mindset, then kit you out in a wetsuit, pair you with a board and walk you to the beach. On the sand we cover safety, ocean awareness, the basics of surfing and a warm-up before you paddle out.
In the water you'll paddle, catch waves and work on your pop-up, with plenty of one-to-one coaching through our Focus Sessions. That means your instructor spends two or three wave blocks with you on one skill or problem, so you move on faster. Expect detailed feedback, plenty of encouragement and a fair bit of laughter, plus a local discount on coffees, hot chocolates, pastries and ice cream on the day.
Lessons take place at Watergate Bay, known for its wide, soft sandy shoreline and consistent waves. It's a local favourite and a brilliant spot for beginners and more experienced surfers alike.
It's an easy short drive from Newquay town centre, with parking close to the beach so you can surf away from the busier town spots and still have cafes and facilities nearby.
No prior surfing experience is needed, and the lesson is suitable for complete beginners. A reasonable level of fitness helps, because surfing can be physically demanding.
You should feel comfortable in the water and be able to swim at least 25 metres unaided.
Adam and Gemma run this as a couple-owned surf school, and they set out to build a session around empathy, professionalism, knowledge and fun. They take your time in the water personally, and their goal is to make this the highlight of your trip to Cornwall.
Our hand-picked instructors create a positive, supportive environment and treat every lesson as a chance to keep you surfing long after you leave. Super-small groups, longer one-to-one time, well-kept kit and exclusive local discounts are all part of that.
You'll meet us at Watergate Bay, about a minute from our HQ in Newquay Bay Resort and around 10 minutes from Newquay town centre. That's where we kit you out and walk you down to the sand.
If conditions mean we need to move the lesson, we'll give you plenty of notice so you can get there without a rush and still have time to change.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your lesson so we have time to check you in and get you into a wetsuit. That buffer also gives us a chance to calm any nerves and talk through the session before you walk to the beach.
On weekends, school holidays and sunny days, give yourself extra time for traffic and parking around the bay. The closest car parks fill quickly when the weather is good.
We sit on The Green, opposite Wax Beach Bar and next to the council car park. Just Park Wallet can sometimes save you a little on the council spaces if you book ahead.
There's more parking opposite Watergate Bay Hotel and on the southern cliff overlooking the bay if the closest car park is full. Allow a short walk down to the beach from those overflow spots.
Arrive in swimwear with slip-on shoes so changing into a wetsuit is quick. We provide the wetsuit and board, and boots in the cooler months, so you do not need to bring your own kit unless you prefer to.
Bring sun cream, water, a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards. If you want a shower after the session, bring some change for the machines on the beach.
We can look after your car keys while you surf, which is usually the simplest way to keep the vehicle locked. There is not a locker room for bags or valuables at the beach base.
Leave other belongings locked in your vehicle before you come down to the sand. Wet kit and a towel are easier to manage if you keep the rest of your day bag in the car.
We surf in the rain. A wet day often means better waves, and you'll be in a wetsuit anyway, so a shower rarely spoils the session.
We only cancel if the beach is red-flagged or we decide conditions aren't safe. If that happens, we'll reschedule you or refund the lesson so you are not left without a plan.
You're welcome to wear your own wetsuit, though we may still suggest one of ours depending on how thick it is and how cold the water feels. Our suits are chosen for the lesson and the time of year.
If you'd like to use your own surfboard, message us on Adventuro chat before the day so we can check it suits the session. Beginner lessons usually work better on our lesson boards, which are more stable in the white water.
This session is for anyone new to surfing, anyone who needs a refresher, or anyone happy to stay in the white water and have a good time. You do not need previous wave experience.
You should be 8 or over, comfortable in the water and able to swim at least 25 metres unaided. If you are unsure, message us and we'll help you pick the right lesson.
Your booking covers around 2.5 hours including getting ready, a qualified instructor, a wetsuit, a surfboard and changing facilities. In the cooler months we also include wetsuit boots.
Groups are capped at 6 students per instructor so you get more one-to-one time than a standard lesson. Towels, swimwear, food, parking and transport are not included.
Focus Sessions are how we coach in the water. Your instructor spends two or three wave blocks with you on one skill or problem, rather than shouting the same tip at the whole group from the shore.
That extra attention is why we keep groups smaller than the industry standard. You get detailed feedback on the next wave, then the instructor rotates so everyone in the group still gets their turn.
