What to Expect

This intensive program is meticulously designed to prepare you for a career as a Surf Instructor, both in the UK and abroad. In three weeks, we'll guide you through your SLSGB lifesaving award and focus on enhancing your surfing to meet the ISA Level 1 Surf Coach qualification standards.

The ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Award, coupled with a lifesaving or Beach Lifeguard Award, sets you up perfectly for the surf teaching profession. Our goal is not just to enhance your surfing skills but also to equip you with the knowledge and tools to be an exceptional surf coach.

For beginners, we recommend starting with our Foundation Surf Training to build essential skills. You can book this at the bottom of this page. For those already surfing, expect your abilities to soar under Alan Stokes' expert tuition.

We’ve recently expanded our syllabus to align with the evolving surf industry, including aspects like surf-skating, accessible surfing, and surf photography. We even explore artificial wave surfing with a visit to The Wave in Bristol. All these additions ensure you're fully prepared to make a splash in the surf industry!

3-Week Itinerary

Please note that our schedule is flexible to accommodate tides and weather changes, but here's what you can expect from this exciting opportunity:

Day One:

Meet our fantastic team and get an overview of the course. Enjoy a glimpse into the ultimate surf class with a lesson from our pro instructors.

Day Two:

Start with a swimming assessment in preparation for Lifeguard training, followed by surf skills development with the legendary Alan Stokes. Prepare for your first video analysis session, logbook introduction, and a bit of surf theory.

Day Three:

More surfing with Alan, enhancing lesson presentations and diving into a second video analysis. In the evening, engage in a talk from The Wave Project about surf therapy.

Day Four:

Further surf skill refinement and surf theory with Alan, plus more video analysis. The evening brings a Surf Skate Workshop, exploring its use as a coaching tool.

Day Five:

An Adaptive Surf workshop with ISA Coach Freddie, covering accessible surf lessons. Afternoon shadowing with Newquay Activity Centre’s surf instructors.

Days Six & Seven:

Relax, free surf, or opt to shadow additional surf lessons.

Day Eight:

Commence Surf Coach Safety or Beach Lifeguard training with theoretical and beach practical sessions on water safety and rescue techniques.

Day Nine:

Classroom First Aid introduction and practical beach training including rescues.

Day Ten:

Deep dive into First Aid and Resuscitation, Run Swim Runs, rescue scenarios, and aftercare. Evening Q&A for extra First Aid insights.

Day Eleven:

Finalising First Aid training and Basic Life Support, with integrated rescue and Surf Coaching scenarios.

Day Twelve:

Your day for individual First Aid assessment and Beach Rescue and water safety assessments.

Day Thirteen:

More surf lesson shadowing with the instructor team.

Day Fourteen:

Take a well-deserved day off.

Day Fifteen:

Optional early morning surf coaching, followed by the first day of ISA surf coaching qualification with Barrie ‘Baz’ Hall.

Day Sixteen:

Continue ISA surf coaching qualification with Baz, focusing on lesson delivery. Evening Surf Photography Workshop with Simon Hickie from Women + Waves.

Day Seventeen:

Further surf skills development with Alan Stokes and video coaching sessions.

Day Eighteen:

Final day of Surf coaching with Alan. Complete and submit logbooks.

Day Nineteen:

Excursion to The Wave in Bristol to explore WaveGarden technology and inland surfing. Opportunity to surf and receive coaching or photography.

Prerequisites

No prior qualifications or proficient surfing skills needed - if surfing skills aren't mastered during the course, there’s an additional 12-month period to reach the required level.
Competent swimming ability and a good level of fitness are essential.
Personal attributes such as patience, teamwork, enthusiasm for learning, leadership, attention to detail, independence, basic computer skills, and the ability to stay calm in new situations are important.
Knowledge of the English language is required.
Participants must be 18 years or older.

Qualifications:
- International Surfing Association (ISA) Level 1 Surf Coach Qualification.
- SLSGB National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ) or SLSGB Surf Coach Safety Award, inclusive of Basic Life Support, Basic and Intermediate First Aid.
Coaching and Theory:
- Expert surf skills coaching by three-time British Champion and top UK Surf Coach, Alan Stokes.
- Engaging surf theory sessions and extensive video analysis coaching.
New Syllabus Additions:
- An enlightening session on Surf Therapy with the Wave Project.
- Workshops on Adaptive Surfing, utilising Surf Skating in coaching, and Surf Photography with a Women + Waves videographer.
- A session on building a surf brand led by Women + Waves Founder Rachel Murphy.
- An experiential trip to The Wave in Bristol, offering insights into working in wave pools.
- Connections with global surf schools for those aspiring to travel with their new qualifications.
Support and Guidance:
- Direction and assistance from top industry professionals throughout the course.

- Inclusion of all necessary shadowing within the three-week program.
- Opportunities to shadow surf lessons at Newquay Activity Centre and Women + Waves coaching weekends.

Equipment and Opportunities:
- Access to all necessary equipment, available even outside of course hours.
- A job interview opportunity with Newquay Activity Centre or Women + Waves post-course.

Accommodation costs (separate from course fee; £795 per month) - you can select this package when you book.
Personal expenditure during the course (e.g., meals, travel).
Security deposit for accommodation (£100, refundable post-inspection).
Costs associated with travel to and from the training centre (fuel, parking) - if you choose the accommodation package, this is walkable but we may occasionally travel further afield to seek out the best conditions.
Retake fees incurred should they be necessary if you do not pass the initial assessment; you will be given training and support to prepare for each activity’s initial assessment whilst on the course, so please do not be concerned.
