Overview

Wales runs a surf coast that most people have either not heard of or wrongly assumed is a second-best alternative to Cornwall. Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire is one of the best beach breaks in the UK — long, powerful and consistent. Whitesands Bay and the Marloes Peninsula catch Atlantic swell with less crowd than their Cornish equivalents. The Gower Peninsula to the east, particularly Llangennith, Rhossili and Langland Bay, has been producing Welsh surfers since the 1960s.

Pembrokeshire

Freshwater West is the headline act: a long, exposed beach break with hollow, fast waves that work in most Atlantic swells. On smaller swells at the north end of the beach it's manageable for intermediates; on bigger days it's a serious wave. Whitesands near St David's is sandier, more forgiving and closer to surf school operations — the natural choice for beginner lessons in Pembrokeshire. Both beaches benefit from Pembrokeshire's position on the receiving end of Atlantic fetch with minimal shelter from the south and west.

Gower

Llangennith on the western tip of Gower is south Wales's most established surf location. The beach is long and consistent, the surf school presence is good and the area is within easy reach of Cardiff and Bristol. Rhossili Down provides some shelter in certain conditions; Langland Bay, further east, is a more sheltered option for longboarders and beginners on smaller days.

Learning to surf in Wales

Surf lessons are available at Whitesands, Freshwater West and Llangennith through several centres. The standard beginner approach — beach session, paddling technique, pop-up practice, white-water riding — applies here as everywhere. Welsh instructors are accustomed to the full range of Atlantic conditions and the peculiarities of surf that arrives with power on a clean swell but can close out badly when the period drops.

When to go

September and October produce the best surf conditions and manageable crowds. July and August bring the most surf school availability and warmest weather but also the most people on the beach. Water temperature is similar to the South West — 10–12°C in winter, 15–16°C in August.
