Sailing in South West England

Overview

The South West is arguably the most varied sailing region in England: Poole Harbour to the east, the tidal creeks of the Fal and Helford in Cornwall, the deep-water anchorages of Dartmouth and Salcombe in Devon, and beyond the Lizard, the open Atlantic. The tidal range, the prevailing south-westerlies and the sheer density of quality anchorages make it an exceptionally good region in which to learn or develop sailing skills.

Sailing grounds

Poole Harbour is one of the world's largest natural harbours and a traditional centre for dinghy and keelboat instruction — its sheltered waters and consistent breeze are ideal for learning. At the other extreme, the open passages around the Lizard and through the Sound offer conditions for those ready to develop real offshore confidence. Dartmouth and Salcombe offer something in between: classic West Country sailing with tidal rivers, sheltered bays and easy access to the Channel.

RYA training

The Royal Yachting Association framework runs through most South West sailing centres. Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper practical courses are popular in the Solent approaches and around Salcombe; RYA Start Sailing and Dinghy Level 1–2 are well suited to the calmer corners of Poole Harbour and the Fal estuary. Many centres also offer keelboat, catamaran and powerboat courses alongside conventional dinghy sailing. Skippered day sails and coastal passages are available for those who want to experience sailing without taking the wheel from the start.

What to expect as a beginner

Beginner dinghy sailing courses typically run over two days and cover sail handling, tacking and gybing, and basic safety. By the end you'll be sailing a dinghy independently in light-to-moderate winds. More advanced courses build on this with navigation, meteorology and longer passages. The South West's variety of conditions means you'll cover a broad range of real-world scenarios.

When to go

The season runs April through October, with July and August seeing the warmest conditions but also the most boat traffic. Spring and autumn offer cleaner breezes and fewer vessels on the water. Winter sailing happens — particularly for those holding formal RYA qualifications — but it's a different proposition entirely.
