The Thames Valley is one of the best inland paddleboarding areas in England. The River Thames and the Oxford Canal wind through Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire offering mile after mile of flat, sheltered, beginner-friendly water, passing meadows, historic towns and classic riverside pubs. With no surf or tide to worry about, this is paddleboarding at its most relaxed — ideal for learning, for family days out, and for gentle touring between locks.
The Thames and the Oxford Canal
The non-tidal Thames above London is calm and scenic, with easy access points and plenty to explore. The Oxford Canal — particularly the picturesque stretch around Thrupp near Kidlington — offers even more sheltered water, with routes towards Oxford city centre or north into the countryside. Both are forgiving venues where most people are standing and paddling within their first session.
Lessons, tours and hire
Local operators offer SUP lessons, guided tours and a range of hire craft. A lesson gets you confident quickly; a guided tour adds the best stretches of river and canal; and hire suits those who already paddle and just want to get on the water. The calm conditions make the area especially good for first-timers, families and groups.
