What to Expect

Your session will begin with a short on-land briefing, where you'll be introduced to your equipment, including your paddle and buoyancy aid. You'll also receive a quick safety briefing to ensure you’re ready to head out onto the water with confidence. The first part of your adventure will focus on getting you used to the board. You’ll start on your knees before being shown the basics of stand-up paddleboarding, including the most effective paddling techniques and best practices.

After getting comfortable on the water, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the local area, giving you the opportunity to explore the River Thames from a new perspective. The session will wrap up with a return to the Eyot Centre where you can reflect on your paddleboarding experience and make some fun memories with your group.

The Eyot Centre, where this session takes place, is located along the River Thames. It offers convenient access to the water and is equipped with changing rooms and toilets, so you’ll have everything you need before and after your session.

Situated in a scenic and accessible spot, it’s the perfect base for your stand-up paddleboarding adventure.

Prerequisites

Participants must be able to swim at least 50 meters unaided. While you don’t need to be an expert swimmer, you should feel comfortable in the water and be able to fall in and get back up on your board safely.

A reasonable level of flexibility is also necessary, as you'll need to be able to transition from kneeling to standing on your paddleboard. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

FAQs:

What should I wear for stand-up paddleboarding?

When it's warm, wear whatever you feel comfortable in, like shorts and a t-shirt or other activewear. If you have neoprene or a wetsuit, that's ideal, but we can provide one if needed—just let us know ahead of time. We recommend wearing footwear that you don’t mind getting wet, such as wet shoes, flip-flops, or old trainers.

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, insect repellent if you have it, a towel, and a change of clothes for your journey home (though hopefully, you won’t need them!). We can keep your car keys safe, but please leave other valuables in your car.

Is stand-up paddleboarding safe?

Falling in can be part of the fun, but your safety is our top priority. Everyone will be given a flotation device, and all boards are equipped with a leash.

We’re trained in first aid to handle any situation. You can wear waterproof footwear or bring your own, such as flip-flops or old trainers, during the session. Please make sure any cuts on your feet or legs are covered with plasters before you get started.

Do I need to be able to swim to try stand-up paddleboarding?

Yes, we require you to be able to swim before taking part in a paddleboarding session. You don’t need to be an expert swimmer, but you should feel comfortable falling into water while wearing a buoyancy aid.

You'll also need a certain level of flexibility and the ability to transition from kneeling to standing on the board.

Can I join if I have no prior paddleboarding experience?

Absolutely! Our sessions are suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Your instructor will guide you through the basics, ensuring that even those new to the sport will feel confident on the water.

We aim to make the session enjoyable for all participants, regardless of ability.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my session?

If the weather conditions are unsafe or unsuitable for paddleboarding, we will contact you in advance to reschedule or cancel the session.

Safety is our top priority, so sessions are only conducted in conditions deemed safe for all participants. We aim to be flexible and will work with you to find a suitable alternative date.

How long does the session last?

Each session lasts for 2 hours. This includes the time for the on-land safety briefing, paddleboarding practice, and a guided tour of the River Thames.

We ensure that you have plenty of time to get comfortable on the board and enjoy the experience.

Lesley, a physiotherapist and SUP Pilates instructor, helps paddlers develop strength, balance, and flexibility on the board. Together, they offer expert-led group and 1-2-1 lessons, race clinics, corporate team-building, river clean-ups, and more across Henley and Berkshire.
