Paddle Explore Award is where you stop waiting for someone to tell you which way to paddle and start planning simple journeys yourself. The coach is still there, but the emphasis shifts toward independence: choosing venues, reading wind and weather, and staying safe while you explore.
Ideally you arrive with Paddle Start or Paddle Discover behind you, though there is no strict prerequisite. Explore works in any craft: kayak, canoe, SUP, bell boat or raft. Sessions typically run across one to two days or a series of modular blocks.
By the end you should be an independent paddler able to plan and undertake self-guided adventures safely on sheltered water. That does not mean paddling alone on a busy shipping lane. It means you understand what you can handle, what kit to take, and when to change the plan because the wind picked up. Sheltered-water confidence does not always transfer to rivers or open coast. That is why discipline-specific awards exist next.
