Overview

Stand-up paddleboarding in the Lake District involves quite different conditions from Cornwall's south coast — which is precisely what makes it interesting. The lakes themselves (Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater, Derwentwater) are sheltered bodies of water with almost no tidal influence, predictable conditions and scenery that would be unreasonably beautiful in a warmer climate. Combined with sea SUP along the Cumbrian coast and river paddleboarding on the Lune and Ribble, the North West offers a comprehensive SUP menu.

Lake paddleboarding

Windermere is the natural starting point — the UK's largest natural lake, with reliable flat conditions for most of the year and a network of access points along its shores. Coniston and Ullswater are quieter alternatives with arguably better mountain backdrops. Derwentwater near Keswick is small enough for a half-day guided circumnavigation and is the usual starting point for several local centres. Early morning sessions on still autumn water are among the more compelling reasons to visit the North West — calm air, mirror conditions and no boat traffic.

River SUP

The rivers draining the western Lakes — the Lune, the Ribble and sections of the Kent — offer river SUP of varying intensity. Flatwater river paddleboarding is excellent for those who want moving water without significant current. When rivers are running with more water, it becomes a more technical proposition; proper instruction is needed before tackling faster sections independently.

Sea SUP along the Cumbrian coast

The Cumbrian coast — Arnside, Morecambe Bay, St Bees Head — offers sea SUP with a different character from the South West: more tidal variability, bigger skies and significantly fewer other paddleboarders. Morecambe Bay in particular requires care and local knowledge before crossing; the tides move fast. Sea SUP in calmer coastal sections is excellent and largely uncrowded.

When to go

May through October is the most reliable. Early mornings in summer produce exceptionally calm lake conditions. Autumn can be stunning — clear air, changing colours, minimal wind on the water. Lake temperatures are cooler than the coast, particularly in spring; a 3/2mm wetsuit is sensible year-round and centres provide kit.
