The South West of England offers some of the most varied scuba diving in Britain. Cornwall's coast is littered with wrecks from centuries of Atlantic shipping: the Manacles reef east of the Lizard has claimed more than a hundred vessels over the centuries, and the accessible wrecks around the Lizard and Falmouth Bay offer dives from 10 to 50 metres within easy boat ride of shore. The Channel Islands — particularly Jersey, which sits close to the shipping lanes and in some of the strongest tidal flows in the world — combine spectacular reef and wall diving with historically significant wreck sites and some of the best visibility in northern European waters.
Diving in Cornwall and Devon
Plymouth Sound, established as Britain's first National Marine Park, provides protected and biodiverse diving accessible from the city: the Breakwater, the Mewstone, and several historic wrecks within the Sound are diveable on day boats. The Eddystone Lighthouse reef, 22km offshore, provides one of the South West's most spectacular reef dives — the lighthouse has stood since 1882 but the reef itself, and the marine life it hosts, predates it by geological time. For wrecks, the Scylla — a purpose-sunk naval vessel in Plymouth Sound — is one of the best artificial reef dives in England.
Jersey and the Channel Islands
Jersey's position at the intersection of Atlantic currents creates exceptional water clarity and species diversity. The tidal range — up to 12 metres at spring tides — means dive planning requires careful attention to slack water, but the rewards are significant: walls covered in jewel anemones, rich kelp forests, bass in large shoals, and occasional visits from larger pelagic species. Jersey's PADI-recognised dive centres offer courses and guided dives that make the most of this remarkable underwater environment.
