The SSI Advanced Adventurer is a non-linear, experience-based program made up of five open water dives, each taken from a different SSI Specialty. It’s designed to give you practical exposure to new types of diving, rather than assess mastery. You’ll work closely with an SSI Professional who will guide each dive and help you reflect on what you’ve learned.
Unlike traditional courses, the Advanced Adventurer requires minimal academic work. You’ll review key concepts for each chosen dive via SSI’s online training platform or during onsite briefings. Topics include dive planning, environmental awareness, and safety considerations unique to each specialty.
This is a non-exam-based certification. Your performance is informally assessed by your instructor, who will focus on your comfort, safety, and ability to follow procedures during each dive. There’s no pass/fail—just a focus on progressive skill development.
adventuro lists hundreds of SSI courses, guided dives and kit rentals across the UK and beyond—so you can keep building your skills after certification.
Completing the SSI Advanced Adventurer course opens up a wider range of diving opportunities and helps you identify which specialty areas you'd like to explore further. While it is not a full specialty certification, each dive counts as the first dive of a corresponding SSI Specialty Program—making it easier and more efficient to continue your training later.
After certification, you're qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 m / 100 ft (if your Deep Dive is included), under conditions similar to those in which you were trained. This means you can join more adventurous dive trips, including deeper reefs, wrecks, and night dives where appropriate. It’s also a helpful stepping stone toward becoming an SSI Specialty Diver or continuing on to the SSI Diver Stress & Rescue program.
Dive centres around the world recognise the Advanced Adventurer as evidence of your growing experience and commitment to safe diving practices—so it’s a great way to build confidence and credibility as a recreational diver.
The SSI Advanced Adventurer typically takes 2–3 days to complete, depending on conditions and your chosen specialties. You’ll complete five open water dives, each focusing on a different specialty area, with dive briefings and debriefs before and after each session. Some dive centres may offer the course over a weekend, or spread across multiple days to suit your schedule.
The SSI Advanced Adventurer program is performance-based, meaning you’ll be assessed on your ability to demonstrate safe diving practices, buoyancy control, and navigation skills during five specialty dives. There's no final exam—instead, your instructor evaluates your practical application of each dive's objectives. Typical dives include Deep Diving, Navigation, and Perfect Buoyancy. You’ll receive feedback throughout and must complete each dive to a satisfactory standard. Most divers complete the course in two days, but some centres may extend this to suit conditions or student needs. Once completed, you’ll be certified to dive to 30 metres, opening up a wider range of dive sites. You can explore and book SSI Advanced Adventurer courses on adventuro’s dedicated diving pages.
