Perfect for children wanting to surf regularly after school, these evening surf club sessions combine structured coaching with a fun and social atmosphere designed to build confidence in the sea over time. Running on selected Wednesday evenings in Newquay, the club welcomes both complete beginners and younger surfers already looking to improve their technique through regular practice and coaching.
Evening sessions begin beside the beach with equipment collection and a quick briefing based on the day’s surf conditions and coaching goals. Coaches organise groups according to confidence and experience levels where possible, helping children feel comfortable while progressing at their own pace. Direct beach access keeps the sessions simple and allows more time to be spent actually surfing rather than carrying equipment long distances.
Time in the water focuses on practical progression through repeated wave riding, paddling drills, positioning exercises, and individual feedback from instructors. New surfers work on learning the basics safely while more experienced participants continue refining their timing, board control, and confidence in changing surf conditions. Sessions are designed to remain active and enjoyable while still helping children improve steadily over the season.
Alongside technical development, the surf club also encourages confidence, teamwork, and friendships through regular group sessions with other young surfers from the local area. Consistent coaching and repeated water time often help children progress much more quickly than occasional standalone lessons.
Most sessions take place on Fistral Beach, one of the UK’s best-known surf beaches thanks to its reliable waves and spacious sandy shoreline. When surf conditions require a more sheltered option, nearby Tolcarne Beach may also be used to provide more suitable waves for younger surfers.
Newquay’s coastline offers an ideal environment for regular surf coaching, combining accessible beaches with a strong watersports culture and excellent surf conditions throughout much of the year. Meeting directly beside the beach also helps make evening sessions straightforward for local families attending after school.
The evening surf club is suitable for children aged between 8 and 16 years old, including complete beginners and surfers with previous experience. Participants should feel reasonably confident in the water before joining the sessions.
These sessions are intended for local participants living within TR and PL postcode areas, and proof of address will be required before the first session takes place.
Regular weekly coaching allows young surfers to build confidence and improve technique steadily over time while enjoying a relaxed and supportive environment in the sea. Smaller coaching groups and experienced instructors help create sessions that feel approachable for beginners while still offering progression opportunities for returning surfers.
Direct beach access, quality surf equipment, changing facilities, and experienced coaches all help make the sessions easy for families while maximising time spent in the water. Coaching also places a strong focus on water safety and helping children feel more comfortable around the sea through regular practice.
Children aged between 8 and 16 years old can take part in the evening surf club sessions. Both beginners and children with previous surfing experience are welcome to join.
Sessions are aimed at local young surfers from TR and PL postcode areas who want regular water time and ongoing coaching.
No previous surfing experience is required. Beginners are introduced to the fundamentals of surfing gradually while more experienced surfers continue developing their confidence and technique.
Coaches adapt guidance depending on each participant’s current level and experience in the water.
Each surf club session lasts for 90 minutes and takes place on Wednesday evenings. This provides enough time for beach coaching, practical water sessions, and individual feedback while fitting around school schedules.
Direct access onto the beach also helps maximise actual surfing time during the sessions.
Yes, surfboards and wetsuits are included for every session. Equipment is selected to suit different ages, abilities, and surf conditions throughout the season.
Changing rooms, warm showers, and bag storage are also available to help make the sessions more comfortable after surfing.
Children usually begin with a quick briefing before heading into the water for practical coaching exercises and wave riding. Depending on experience, sessions may focus on paddling, standing up, positioning, or improving control while surfing.
Regular feedback from instructors helps participants build confidence steadily over time.
When needed, sessions may move to nearby Tolcarne Beach where conditions are often more sheltered and suitable for younger surfers.
Using alternative beaches when necessary helps coaches provide safer and more manageable surf conditions for the group.
