This practical two-day Outdoor First Aid course is tailored for those working or adventuring in remote or outdoor environments where access to emergency services may be delayed. It covers essential First Aid skills through realistic, scenario-based training designed for outdoor professionals and expedition leaders.
Training takes place outdoors from the field at Glan Y Mor Farm and is entirely hands-on, with scenarios built around real-life situations outdoor professionals and expedition leaders might face. Across the two days, you’ll work individually and in groups through practical tasks and live simulations, learning to stay calm under pressure and respond effectively to emergencies such as fractures, anaphylaxis, hypothermia, and more.
Each day includes both practical and written assessments, carried out by the course instructor without the need for external assessors. Learners who meet the required standard will receive a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid, valid for three years. The course follows a comprehensive syllabus, covering everything from head and spinal injuries to asthma, bites, and minor wounds. Expect a high level of participation, regular feedback, and opportunities to ask questions tailored to your outdoor context.
Glan Y Mor Farm is set on the edge of Pembroke, offering a peaceful, open space ideal for realistic outdoor First Aid training. The field provides a practical environment where conditions can closely reflect those encountered in real expeditions and remote activities.
Participants should park by the gate to the field, where you'll be met on arrival. There are no indoor facilities, so please come prepared for all weather conditions and bring a packed lunch.
You must be at least 16 years old to attend. This course is a recognised prerequisite for all British Canoeing Leadership awards and meets the First Aid requirements for Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver, and Gold expeditions.
No previous First Aid experience is required. The course is suitable for both complete beginners and those needing to renew or upgrade their existing certificate, particularly if you work or volunteer outdoors.

This course is ideal for anyone who works or spends time in outdoor or remote environments, especially those involved in outdoor education, expedition leadership, or Duke of Edinburgh supervision. It is designed with practical application in mind, making it particularly relevant to instructors, guides, and paddlesport leaders.
It’s also appropriate for those needing a First Aid qualification to meet the requirements of outdoor governing bodies such as British Canoeing. No previous experience is required, making it suitable for both new learners and those renewing an existing certificate.
Yes, this Outdoor First Aid course fully meets the First Aid requirements for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The practical, outdoor delivery format ensures that participants are trained in conditions similar to those they might encounter during expeditions.
It also covers a broad range of relevant topics including environmental injuries, CPR, and shock management, all of which are useful for young leaders and supervisors who may be supporting DofE groups in the field.
Successful participants will be awarded a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid, which is valid for three years. This nationally recognised qualification demonstrates your ability to provide effective First Aid in a remote environment.
Certification is based on continuous assessment throughout the course, including practical demonstrations and written questions. There are no external assessors, and the assessment process is designed to support your learning.
The course takes place entirely outdoors, so participants should come fully prepared for all weather conditions, including rain, wind, and cold. Training continues in all but the most extreme conditions to ensure realism and relevance.
In the event of severe weather that affects safety or the ability to deliver core parts of the course, the instructor may adjust the schedule or scenarios slightly. However, the aim is always to keep the training as close to real-world conditions as possible.
The training is held in a field at Glan Y Mor Farm, which does not include traditional classroom or indoor facilities. This setting helps to simulate real-life outdoor conditions, but it also means that shelter and toilet access may be limited.
Participants are encouraged to bring appropriate clothing, footwear, and supplies for spending the full day outside. Please dress accordingly and consider bringing a camping chair or sit mat for comfort during breaks.
Accommodation is not included in this course, and there are no overnight facilities at Glan Y Mor Farm. Participants will need to arrange their own accommodation locally for the duration of the course.
Pembroke and the surrounding area offer a range of options, including local B&Bs, small hotels, and campsites. It’s advisable to book early, especially during peak periods or weekends.
