Keen to get others involved in paddlesport from the very first session? Over two days, you'll gain the confidence and practical skills needed to run safe, enjoyable taster sessions for canoes, kayaks or paddleboards in very sheltered water conditions. Training and assessment are combined across the weekend, making it an efficient and hands-on way to get qualified.
Across two full days, you’ll build the skills and knowledge needed to confidently introduce beginners to paddlesport. The course focuses on how to manage groups, set up equipment, and deliver engaging activities that help people feel comfortable and safe on the water. Expect to spend plenty of time paddling—practising how to lead mini-journeys, run games and structure simple sessions. You’ll use your preferred craft, but also gain an understanding of how to support participants using a range of boats or boards.
There’s a strong practical focus throughout, with assessment built into the weekend. You’ll receive support and feedback as you go, with opportunities to try out ideas in a low-pressure setting. You’re encouraged to bring your own paddling kit, but everything else you need can be provided. Optional eLearning is also available before the course to help you prepare.
The course takes place beside Pembroke Castle, with direct access to sheltered water that's ideal for learning and group sessions. The calm conditions here make it easy to focus on developing your instructing skills without worrying about the environment.
Pembroke itself is well connected by road and public transport, and there are a number of local shops, cafés, and accommodation options nearby. Parking is available within a short walk of the launch point.
To take part, you must be at least 14 years old and have completed either the Paddlesport Safety and Rescue course or the Foundation Safety and Rescue Training. A certificate will be required as proof. You must also hold full membership with your Home Nation paddlesport body (Paddle UK, Canoe Wales, Scottish Canoe Association, or CANI).
Registration for the award must be completed before the course and is separate from your membership or course booking. You’ll be asked to send proof of registration at least one week before the course. If you’re unsure about any of the prerequisites, get in touch in advance and we’ll help guide you through them.
The centre running this course has years of experience supporting new instructors across all areas of paddlesport. You’ll be learning from knowledgeable tutors who focus on practical coaching techniques that are easy to transfer into your own club or organisation.
Courses are run in small groups, allowing for plenty of personalised feedback and time to ask questions. The setting in Pembroke offers the perfect learning environment for beginners and instructors alike, with access to quality kit, supportive instruction and a strong community focus.
No, you don’t need to be experienced in canoe, kayak and paddleboard to attend the course. You’ll be able to complete most elements from your preferred craft, whether that’s a canoe, kayak or SUP. The course will still give you the knowledge and strategies to support others using any of the three.
That said, it’s useful to have at least some familiarity with the other craft types. You won’t be expected to demonstrate advanced skills in every boat or board, but you will need to understand how to manage sessions that include multiple craft, especially from a safety and group management perspective.
Yes, you can borrow boats, paddles and safety gear such as buoyancy aids and helmets if needed. If you don’t have your own paddling kit, just let the centre know in advance so they can make sure everything is ready for you on the day.
You are encouraged to bring your own personal paddling clothing such as a wetsuit, dry top, or cag if you have it. Wearing your usual kit can help you feel more comfortable on the water and better prepare you for leading real sessions.
No, lunch is not included in the course fee. You’ll need to bring your own food and drinks for both days. A packed lunch is recommended, as the course usually runs from morning until late afternoon with short breaks throughout the day.
There may be limited time during the lunch break, so it’s best to bring something ready to eat. Pembroke has local cafés and shops nearby if you want to pick something up before the course each morning.
You must complete registration for the Paddle Sport Instructor award with your Home Nation before the course starts. Without this, you won’t be able to be assessed or certified at the end of the weekend.
The registration is a separate process from course booking and usually includes a fee. You’ll need to log in to your membership portal, locate the ‘Registration’ section, and select the Paddle Sport Instructor option. Proof of registration must be sent at least one week before the course.
You should be confident in handling your chosen craft on very sheltered water, including manoeuvring, launching and landing. You don’t need to be an expert, but you must be comfortable taking part in practical tasks and coaching activities on the water.
The course is focused on instruction rather than high-level paddling, but you’ll still need to demonstrate good control, communication and awareness of group dynamics. Completing a Foundation Safety and Rescue Training or Paddlesport Safety and Rescue course beforehand will help build this foundation.
It can be a physically active couple of days, with time spent on the water, moving boats, and working with others. However, it is delivered in a supportive way and tailored to suit a range of fitness and ability levels.
If you have any concerns about physical access or mobility, it’s worth contacting the centre beforehand. Adaptations can often be made, and the focus is on instructional skill rather than physical endurance.
