Overview

The South West is where most people in England learn to surf, and with good reason. The Atlantic rolls in consistently, the sea is marginally warmer than everywhere else on this island, and there are enough surf schools to mean you'll never be left standing on a beach wondering what to do with a board. Cornwall handles the majority of beginners; Devon handles the overflow and the people who find Cornwall slightly crowded.

The best surf beaches

The north Cornish coast — Fistral, Polzeath, Croyde, Saunton — catches the best Atlantic swell. Fistral at Newquay is the UK's most well-known break; Polzeath and Watergate Bay are gentler and better suited to learners. In Devon, Croyde Bay is a proper surf town with a compact beach break that works in most swells. Saunton Sands to the north is a long, gently sloping beach that is close to ideal for beginner lessons. The south coast is calmer and more suitable for flatwater variants, though spots like Porthleven occasionally produce exceptional waves when conditions align.

What to expect on a beginner lesson

Most beginner surf lessons run for two to three hours. You'll start on the beach with a brief theory session covering wave reading, paddling technique and how to pop to standing. The rest is in the water, initially in the white water after the break, where waves are smaller and more predictable. By the end of a two-hour session, most complete beginners will have stood up at least once. What they do after that is largely gravitational.

Progressing beyond beginner

The South West's surf school density means there's solid progression available. Improver sessions focus on reading waves, positioning on the line-up, and beginning to catch unbroken green faces — which is where surfing actually becomes surfing rather than white-water bodyboarding with a different board. Advanced coaching covers cutbacks, bottom turns and the various skills that make surfing look effortless from the shore.

When to go

Swells arrive year-round, but summer brings the most favourable combination of waist-high waves and warm air. September and October often produce some of the year's best surf — swell picking up after summer, fewer crowds, sea still warm from the season. Water temperature peaks at around 18°C in August; January/February sees around 9°C. Check the surf and tide forecast and surf at lifeguarded beaches where possible.

Polzeath, Bude and Saunton Sands are reliably good for beginners — sheltered enough with consistently mellow white-water sections. Fistral is better left until you've got the basics sorted.

Typically two to three hours, including a beach warm-up and theory session before you get in the water. Most centres offer half-day and full-day options.

Longboards — usually 8 to 10 feet — are standard for beginners. They're more buoyant and easier to balance on, making the pop-up considerably less terrifying.

Yes. A basic swim competency (generally 50 metres) is required at all surf schools. You'll be in a wetsuit and buoyancy aid, but the ability to swim is non-negotiable.

Most surf schools offer lessons from age 7 or 8 upwards. Some run dedicated kids' camps and junior programmes during the school holidays.

Wetsuits are provided by all schools and are essential even in summer — 3/2mm in summer, 5/3mm in autumn and spring. Board shorts over the wetsuit are optional on warmer days.
