Pembrokeshire's coastal National Park gives sea kayakers 186 miles of dramatic, varied coastline; the rivers of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons rank among Britain's finest whitewater venues; and glacial lakes tucked between mountain ridges offer flatwater paddling in scenery that puts most alternatives to shame. Sea kayaking in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire is the headline act. The coastline between St Davids and Tenby — tidal races, offshore islands, sea caves, seal colonies on rocky skerries — is one of the finest sea kayaking environments in Europe. The offshore islands (Ramsey, Skomer, Skokholm, Grassholm) require tidal crossings with some commitment; the passage from St Davids Head to Ramsey Island through the Ramsey Sound is not somewhere to wander into without knowing the tidal stream. For beginners, the sheltered bays around St Brides Bay, Whitesands and Freshwater West are excellent starting points, well away from the tidal complexity. St Davids and Fishguard are the main bases with the best concentration of local operators.

Whitewater kayaking in Wales

The River Tryweryn at Bala is Wales's premier whitewater venue — a consistent Grade III course that runs year-round on regulated releases from Llyn Celyn reservoir. It's as close to guaranteed water as you'll find in Welsh rivers, which are otherwise highly rainfall-dependent. The River Dee below Llangollen has excellent rapids in the right conditions and an established teaching tradition. The rivers of the Brecon Beacons — Mellte, Hepste, Nedd — are spectacular in spate, with waterfall drops and gorge sections, but they require specific river-reading skills and significant water levels.

Flatwater and lake kayaking

Llyn Padarn near Llanberis sits at the foot of Snowdon — flatwater paddling with one of Wales's most famous mountain as a backdrop. Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is the largest natural lake in Wales and excellent for touring and beginner sessions. September and October are often excellent — the wildlife is still active, the crowds have thinned and the sea is at its annual warmest.
