A guided kayaking experience set on the clear waters of Llyn Padarn, offering a chance to take in mountain scenery from a different perspective. This session is designed for all abilities, with support from experienced guides throughout the time on the water. Along the way, you’ll learn about the surrounding area while enjoying a steady and relaxed paddle.
Your session begins with a welcome and a full safety briefing on the shoreline, where your guide will run through the equipment and help you get comfortable in your kayak. There’s time to practise basic paddling techniques before heading out onto the water, so you feel ready before the main part of the experience begins.
Once on the lake, the route takes you across open water with wide views of surrounding peaks including Snowdon, Crib Goch, and Moel Eilio. Your guide will share stories about the area’s history, culture, and local legends as you paddle, with a planned stop along the shoreline where you can step out, stretch your legs, and take a closer look at the old slate industry remains, including historic bunkhouse structures.
As the session continues, there’s also the option for a short wild swim in a sheltered spot for those who want to try it. The experience finishes back at the starting point, with time to relax and change before leaving.
Llyn Padarn sits in the heart of Snowdonia, surrounded by mountain scenery and steeped in industrial heritage. The lake is well known for its connection to the historic slate industry, with remnants of old workings and buildings still visible along the shoreline.
The area offers a unique mix of natural landscape and cultural history, with clear waters and wide views across some of North Wales’ most recognisable peaks. It’s a popular setting for outdoor water activities due to its sheltered conditions and interesting shoreline features.
No previous kayaking experience is needed, and beginners are regularly supported through the session. Participants should be comfortable spending time on the water and be able to follow basic instructions from the guide.
A reasonable level of general fitness is recommended, as you will be paddling for the duration of the session with a short break ashore. Non-swimmers can take part as buoyancy aids are provided and must be worn at all times.
This experience is led by a team built around years of outdoor guiding, instruction, and expedition experience across a range of environments. Sessions are kept to smaller groups where possible, helping ensure everyone gets time and attention on the water.
Kieran, the lead guide behind the team, has a background in scouting, extended wilderness expeditions, and outdoor leadership training through Bangor University. His experience includes kayaking, climbing, and guiding across varied environments, and the wider team brings strong local knowledge of Snowdonia and its waters, creating a well-supported and confident environment for guests.
No prior experience is required to take part in this session. Beginners are regularly welcomed and supported from the moment you arrive, starting with a clear briefing and time to practise on the water before heading out.
The experience is also suitable for more confident paddlers, including those with previous experience on different types of water. The guide adapts support depending on ability levels within the group, so everyone can progress comfortably.
The minimum age for this activity is 5 years old. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is also taking part in the session.
There is no upper age limit, and participation is based more on comfort in the water and general mobility rather than age. As long as participants feel able to take part safely, they are welcome.
Yes, there is a maximum weight limit of 130kg (approximately 20 stone) for safety reasons. This ensures the equipment performs correctly and remains comfortable for all participants.
If you are close to the limit or unsure, it is worth checking before booking so the team can confirm suitability and advise if any adjustments are needed.
Non-swimmers are welcome on this experience and regularly take part. Everyone wears a buoyancy aid throughout the session, which keeps you supported in the water at all times.
Your guide stays close throughout the activity, and full instruction is given before you enter the water. Confidence is built gradually, so even those new to water-based activities can take part comfortably.
Wetsuits and water shoes are provided, but you will need to bring swimwear or shorts and a t-shirt to wear underneath if you choose to use the wetsuit. Clothing you don’t mind getting wet is also suitable if you prefer not to wear one.
It’s also recommended to bring a towel, a full change of dry clothes, suncream, and a bottle of water. A waterproof phone case is useful if you plan to bring your phone, although secure storage options or purchase options may be available on site.
Yes, but it must be fully waterproof or secured in a suitable waterproof case that floats or is firmly attached. The lake is deep in places, so anything dropped cannot be retrieved.
To make things easier, your guide will take photos throughout the session. These are shared free of charge after the experience, so you can focus on enjoying the time on the water without needing to handle your device.
Capsizing is unlikely as the kayaks used are very stable and designed for beginners as well as experienced paddlers. Most participants remain dry for the duration of the activity.
However, if it does happen, everyone is wearing a buoyancy aid and the guide is trained to assist quickly and safely. A full briefing is provided so you know exactly what to do if you find yourself in the water.
The route offers wide views of surrounding mountain scenery including Snowdon, Crib Goch, and Moel Eilio. The lake also provides a close-up look at historic slate industry remains along the shoreline.
You’ll pass areas of cultural interest, including old bunkhouse structures used by slate workers. The guide shares stories and local history throughout, adding context to what you’re seeing as you move across the water.
