Paddle through a lesser-known stretch of Pembrokeshire’s waterways on this relaxed guided canoe tour from Pembroke Dock to Carew. This trip follows the upper Daugleddau estuary and into the Carew River, offering a quiet, scenic experience with plenty to see along the way.
After meeting your guides in the Cleddau Reach Car Park, you’ll be issued with buoyancy aids, dry bags, and paddles, and given a short briefing about safety and the route. Once everyone’s ready, the group will walk down to the boats, which will be prepped and ready by the water. A quick demo will follow, covering basic paddling technique and what to expect from the route.
The paddle starts in Pembroke Dock, making use of tidal flow to guide the group through the upper Daugleddau estuary, passing wooded banks, wide skies, and the occasional riverside feature like old quays and stone bridges. The group will head past Lawrenny before branching off into the Carew River, aiming for the historic Carew Mill and castle ruins. Guides will share bits of local history, wildlife facts, and give practical help to anyone needing a hand with paddling technique. The pace is steady and there will be breaks to rest and take in the surroundings.
The session ends with a vehicle shuttle back to the original meeting point. In total, the experience runs for about three hours including the time on the water and the return drive.
This tour takes place on the upper Daugleddau estuary in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. It's a peaceful and rarely paddled waterway that flows inland from Milford Haven, passing through quiet valleys and wooded banks before branching off into the Carew River.
Starting at Pembroke Dock, the trip passes through an area rich with wildlife and history. It's a great way to experience a different side of the National Park—less crowded but full of character and nature.
Participants must complete a short medical declaration form in advance of joining the tour. While no previous canoeing experience is necessary, you should be comfortable sitting in a boat and prepared for some light physical activity.
Everyone should arrive 15 minutes before the start time. There are no toilet facilities at the meeting point, so please plan ahead and make any necessary stops before arriving.
The team behind these sessions are experienced paddlers who know the waterways of Pembrokeshire extremely well. Safety, fun, and accessibility are always front of mind, and support is always on hand for those new to canoeing or feeling a little unsure.
Their goal is to give participants a relaxed and enjoyable way to access lesser-known parts of the national park. Whether it’s your first time on the water or you’ve paddled before, the guides take pride in creating a friendly and flexible environment for all.
No prior experience is necessary to take part. The tour is suitable for beginners as well as those who have some paddling knowledge. Before setting off, the guide provides a comprehensive safety briefing along with basic paddling instruction to ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident.
Throughout the trip, guides stay close to the group, offering assistance and advice where needed. The pace is relaxed and designed to suit all abilities, so even if you are new to canoeing, you’ll be supported every step of the way.
Due to the tidal nature of the estuary and potential changes in weather, tours may be altered, postponed, or cancelled for safety reasons. The team monitors conditions closely and will notify you as early as possible if changes need to be made.
If a trip is cancelled due to weather, you will be offered an alternative date or a refund. Light rain generally doesn’t affect the tour, but strong winds, heavy rain, or poor visibility can make paddling unsafe, so safety always comes first.
Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. There is no strict minimum age, but children should be able to sit still in a canoe for the duration of the trip and follow safety instructions.
If you have concerns about whether your child is suitable for this trip, it’s best to get in touch. The guides can offer advice and recommend if any additional arrangements are needed to make the experience enjoyable and safe for younger paddlers.
All necessary equipment is supplied, including a 2–3 seater canoe, paddles, buoyancy aids (which must be worn at all times), and a dry bag for your spare clothes. Transport from the finish point back to the meeting area is also included.
You should bring a complete change of clothes, footwear that can get wet, a waterproof jacket, towel, suncream, water, and any personal medication. Being prepared helps ensure you stay comfortable throughout the three-hour tour.
The meeting point is at the Cleddau Reach Car Park, adjacent to postcode SA72 6UJ. Arrive 15 minutes before your start time to allow time for check-in and equipment fitting.
Look out for staff in orange tops next to the branded vehicles and canoe trailer. Please do not enter nearby buildings, as the team operates outdoors by the car park. The guides will provide dry bags, fit buoyancy aids, and brief you on the plan before launching.
There are no toilet or changing facilities at the meeting location, so it’s advised to use facilities before arrival. The nature of the site means it is quite basic, so please come prepared.
You will receive a dry bag to keep spare clothes dry while paddling, and guides can assist with any small adjustments on site, but full changing before or after the tour must be done elsewhere.
