The South West's coastline is essentially one long argument for taking up kayaking. Stretching from the Severn Estuary to Land's End and round into the Channel, it offers conditions for every level: sheltered estuaries where complete beginners can find their feet, sea caves and rocky arches that reward those who've learned to read a tidal race, and open-water crossings for those who genuinely can't sit still.
Where to kayak
Cornwall and Devon lead the charge. Sea kayaking along the Cornish coast — Kynance Cove, the Lizard, the Helford River — is as scenic as the UK gets. Devon offers contrasting flavours: the Dart estuary from Dartmouth is glassy and protected, while Slapton Sands and Start Bay provide open-sea practice. The Dorset Jurassic Coast adds a geological dimension, with limestone stacks, arches and sea caves around Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove that repay a slow, paddled approach.
Getting started
If you've never sat in a kayak, the South West is one of the best places in the UK to learn. Sheltered spots around Falmouth Bay, Torbay and Poole Harbour see calm conditions for much of the season. A half-day beginner session will have you paddling confidently by early afternoon; a full-day course typically covers basic paddle strokes, capsize recovery and a short coastal tour. Most centres provide all kit — boat, paddle, buoyancy aid, wetsuit.
Progressing to coastal touring
Once you can handle a kayak reliably, the South West opens up considerably. British Canoeing coastal touring skills are taught at several centres, covering tide reading, navigation, rough-water entry and exit, and group rescue. Multi-day touring in this region is exceptional: kit your sea kayak with hatches and camping gear and you can explore uninhabited coves and sleep on beaches that most visitors will never reach. River kayaking is also on the menu — the Dart, the Exe and several Dartmoor streams offer grades from gentle flat water to white water depending on rainfall.
When to go
May through September gives the most reliable weather and warmest water. Sea temperatures off the South West reach 16–18°C in August — comfortable with a shortie wetsuit, manageable in a longer wetsuit in spring and autumn. Winter sea kayaking is entirely possible but best left to those with appropriate experience; guidance from a qualified coach is strongly recommended outside the main season.
