Kayaking in South East England

South East England puts adventure within easy reach of London — the South Downs, the Kent and Sussex coast and the Solent. Sail and powerboat, hike the downs, climb, kayak and paddleboard, with a huge range of courses and centres.

Overview

The South East is England's most densely populated region and also, counterintuitively, one of its better places to go kayaking. The Thames and its tributaries, the Norfolk Broads, the Medway, the Cam in Cambridge and the Oxfordshire rivers provide a network of flatwater routes that most Londoners would be surprised to know exists. Sea kayaking off the Sussex coast and around the Thames Estuary adds a more challenging dimension for those wanting tidal conditions.

Urban and river kayaking

Urban kayaking has its own appeal. Paddling through central London by kayak is genuinely different from viewing it at street level — the river corridor is quiet compared to the roads above, herons and cormorants are regular fixtures, and the architecture between the bridges is visible in angles that don't exist on foot. The Islington Boat Club, operating on the Regent's Canal, offers kayaking in a context that feels more like a park. The Thames above Oxford — around Lechlade and between Oxford and Abingdon — is excellent flatwater country: quiet, pastoral, with few other boats and good access points.

Norfolk Broads and other waterways

The Norfolk rivers — Bure, Yare, Waveney — are navigable, sheltered and exceptional for wildlife. The Medway in Kent has developed as a kayaking corridor, particularly around Maidstone. Several centres offer multi-day river tours; the Thames from Oxford to London is a natural multi-day route, well-suited to camping or overnight stops in riverside towns.

Sea kayaking off Sussex and Kent

The Seven Sisters and Beachy Head coastline is spectacular sea kayaking country: chalk cliffs, sea caves and variable tidal conditions. Chichester Harbour and the inlets of the Solent approaches are more sheltered and used regularly by sea kayak operators. Conditions here are more technical than inland river paddling and require appropriate experience or guided instruction.

Many centres accept children from age 7–8 on flatwater. River and lake sessions are more appropriate than sea kayaking for younger paddlers.

Flat, wide and very peaceful. The Broads have minimal motorboat traffic on quieter channels, exceptional birdlife and a distinctly different feel from urban river paddling.

British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor training, beginner paddler awards and safety and rescue courses are available from several South East centres.

Not without qualified instruction. The chalk coast can have significant swell, tidal races around headlands and variable landing conditions. Always use a qualified guide.
