Cuckmere Haven Beach Paddle Trip

This trip is suitable for anyone aged eight ( accompanied by a guardian) and above with some previous flat-water paddling experience. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, ensuring safety and support throughout the journey.

Groups of up to 16 people can join together, making it suitable for families, friends, or small clubs. Instructors adapt guidance to different abilities so everyone can enjoy the trip safely.

The guided trip lasts approximately three hours, including a safety briefing, on-water instruction, and the paddle itself. The route covers either the village of Alfriston or the beach at Cuckmere Haven, returning along the tidal river.

During the journey, participants practise steering and basic control of their craft while learning about river conditions and tides. Instructors provide guidance and tips throughout, making the experience both enjoyable and informative.

Attendees can choose from sit-on-top kayaks with a backrest, closed cockpit kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards (SUPs). Each craft type is suited to different levels of stability and paddling style.

Instructors provide guidance on selecting the right craft for comfort and skill level. Equipment is checked before departure to ensure safety and correct setup for all participants.

The trip requires some prior flat-water paddling experience; it is not designed for complete beginners. Those who have practised on calm rivers or lakes will find this trip a natural step forward.

The guided format ensures that even those with modest experience can learn about tidal currents, navigation, and teamwork on the water in a safe, structured environment.

A thorough safety briefing is provided at the start of the trip, covering equipment use, buoyancy aid fitting, and river awareness. Instructors remain on the water at all times to assist and supervise.

Participants are supplied with buoyancy aids, and guidance is given on controlling the craft in tidal conditions. This ensures that paddlers are confident and safe throughout the journey.

Yes, trips allow for breaks either at the village of Alfriston or on the beach at Cuckmere Haven. During these stops, participants can stretch, explore the surroundings, or take photos.

Instructors provide advice on safe re-entry into the craft after breaks. Breaks also offer time to ask questions and learn more about the river environment and craft handling.

Clothing suitable for getting wet, such as swimwear or quick-dry sportswear, is recommended. Participants should bring a change of clothes, towel, and non-slip footwear for the journey.

In sunny conditions, sunscreen, a hat, and water for hydration are advised. Layers can also help in cooler weather to ensure comfort during the paddle.
