North West England is home to the Lake District — England's finest mountains and lakes. Hike and scramble the fells, climb, and kayak or paddleboard the lakes, learning navigation and watersports with expert local centres.

Overview

Kayaking in the North West of England covers a lot of ground — from the glacial lakes of Cumbria to the tidal creeks of the Cheshire coast and the gorges draining the Pennines. The inland and coastal paddling options are equally strong, which makes it somewhat difficult to classify neatly but considerably easier to enjoy.

Lake District kayaking

The Lake District lakes are the backbone of the region's kayaking offer: long, relatively sheltered bodies of water with mountain backdrops and, in peak season, a lot of other craft to navigate around. Windermere, Coniston and Ullswater are the main venues for taught sessions and guided tours; Derwentwater near Keswick is smaller and more intimate, offering a guided circumnavigation that takes most of a morning. Sea kayaking along the Cumbrian coast — around St Bees Head and the more remote northern sections — is excellent for confident paddlers but requires appropriate tidal awareness.

River kayaking

The Rivers Lune, Ribble and Eden drain the western Pennines and provide river kayaking from Grade I to Grade IV depending on water levels and which section you're on. The Kent and Mint through the Kendal area are accessible introduction rivers. For those drawn by the white-water element, the North West has genuine rapids without requiring a trip to Wales or Scotland.

Getting started

Guided kayak tours on the lakes are the entry point for most people new to the area. Qualified British Canoeing coaches lead sessions on Windermere, Coniston and Derwentwater, covering basic paddle technique and safety. River kayaking courses progress from introduction sessions on moving flat water through to white-water rescue skills for those going further. Most centres provide all kit — kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid and wetsuit or dry cag.
