Cornwall is the undisputed capital of British freediving. The combination of clear, Gulf Stream-warmed Atlantic water, accessible depth close to shore, and a concentration of the country's most experienced instructors has made the county the natural home of the sport in the UK. It hosts the country's only SSI freediving instructor training centre, national champions, and a community that ranges from competitive depth divers to people taking their very first breath-hold. If you want to learn to freedive in Britain, Cornwall is where to do it.
Why Cornwall
The practical reasons are water quality and access to depth. Cornish coves offer 5–12 metres of visibility in the right conditions and depth within a short swim of the shore — important for the open-water progression that pool training alone can't provide. The autumn months, when summer plankton has cleared but the water retains its warmth, often deliver the best freediving visibility of the year.
Courses and progression
A beginner freediving course combines theory (breath-hold physiology, equalisation, safety), pool or confined-water work (static and dynamic apnea) and open-water dives to progressive depths. Cornish centres run the full SSI, AIDA and PADI pathways from first-timer through to instructor, and several link freediving with spearfishing for those interested in sustainable, breath-hold fishing.
