The AIDA 3 programme is designed to bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced freediving. It introduces deeper theory and more refined techniques to help you dive deeper, stay longer, and perform all aspects of the sport with greater confidence and safety.
Expect a supportive and structured learning environment, with plenty of time for repetition and feedback. Course lengths and structure may vary slightly by training centre, but the core AIDA 3 standards remain consistent worldwide.
Upon successful completion of the AIDA 3 Advanced Freediver course, you'll be certified to dive to depths of up to 30 m / 98 ft (and up to 40 m / 131 ft in optimal conditions with appropriate supervision). This certification demonstrates a solid grasp of advanced freediving theory and techniques, including free fall, advanced equalisation, and safety protocols needed at greater depths.
You’ll also be qualified to act as a safety diver for other AIDA 3-level freedivers during training. This course is a prerequisite for those wishing to progress to AIDA 4 (Master Freediver) or to begin the pathway toward becoming a freediving instructor. It also opens the door to deeper recreational freediving, competitive training, and more advanced underwater exploration—always within your personal limits and with a focus on safety and buddy support.
Looking to continue your freediving journey? Adventuro lists hundreds of freediving courses, trips, and gear rentals to help you find your next adventure.
The AIDA 3 Advanced Freediver course typically takes 3 to 4 days to complete, depending on conditions and student readiness. It includes a mix of classroom theory, pool or confined water sessions, and open water dives. Some centres may offer the theory portion online ahead of time to maximise in-water training.
The AIDA 3 Advanced Freediver course includes both theoretical and practical assessments to ensure a comprehensive understanding of advanced freediving skills. You'll complete written exams covering topics like physiology, equalisation, and safety protocols, along with in-water evaluations. In the pool, expect to demonstrate a static breath-hold of at least 2 minutes 45 seconds and a dynamic apnea swim of 55 metres. Open water sessions assess your ability to dive to a minimum of 24 metres while performing correct technique, equalisation, rescue, and safety procedures. Instructors closely monitor your progress and provide personalised feedback. While most students complete the course within the standard schedule, additional coaching dives can be arranged if needed. Adventuro offers a wide range of centres where you can book your AIDA 3 course with experienced instructors.

Find activitiesYou must be at least 18 years old (or 16 with parental consent) and hold an AIDA 2 Freediver certification or equivalent. You should also have recent freediving experience, a reasonable fitness level, and be able to swim at least 200 metres unaided. If your AIDA 2 is more than a year old, a refresher session may be recommended before starting AIDA 3.
AIDA 3 builds on your foundational skills and introduces advanced techniques. You'll learn free-fall diving, efficient finning, advanced equalisation methods like Frenzel, and more refined breathing and relaxation techniques. Rescue scenarios and buddy procedures are also covered in depth, with a strong focus on safety and dive planning.
To complete the AIDA 3 certification, you must successfully perform a constant weight (CWT) dive to a minimum depth of 24 metres. Instructors often encourage you to go deeper if you're comfortable, but 24 metres is the required benchmark. Your technique, safety awareness, and ability to manage equalisation at depth are key factors in assessment.
Yes, AIDA 3 is a step up in both skill and fitness requirements. You’ll do longer breath-holds, deeper dives, and more complex rescues. While you don’t need to be an elite athlete, good cardiovascular health, comfort in the water, and a calm mindset are essential. Centres may provide conditioning advice or suggest preparation exercises ahead of time.
AIDA 2 focuses on foundational freediving skills like safety, basic breath-hold techniques, and shallow depth diving. AIDA 3 introduces more advanced elements such as deeper constant weight dives, free-fall techniques, and more complex rescue scenarios. The theory component is also more in-depth, covering equalisation, physiology, and dive planning strategies.
Most AIDA 3 courses take three to four days to complete, depending on weather, student progress, and the structure of the training centre. This usually includes theory sessions, pool training, and at least three open water dives. Adventuro’s partner centres often offer flexible scheduling and extra coaching if needed.
It depends on the centre, but many provide freediving gear like wetsuits, masks, fins, and weights. However, having your own well-fitting equipment can improve comfort and performance. If you’re serious about progressing in freediving, investing in gear like a low-volume mask and long fins is a good idea. Check with your chosen centre on Adventuro for equipment rental options.
AIDA 3 places strong emphasis on safety. You’ll learn to perform deep-water rescues, manage hypoxia and blackout scenarios, and act as a reliable buddy. Safety line use, lanyards, and emergency protocols are all covered. This course ensures you’re not only a capable diver but also a responsible one, able to support others in deep water.
If you don’t meet one or more performance criteria during the course, your instructor will give you detailed feedback and recommend extra training, which can usually be arranged at the same centre. Many Adventuro centres offer additional coaching sessions or private instruction to help you reach the required standard safely and confidently.
