Designed for qualified beach lifeguards needing to maintain an active SLSGB NVBLQ qualification, this one-day proficiency assessment focuses on reassessing essential rescue skills, fitness standards and first aid competency. The course is aimed at experienced lifeguards who already hold the qualification and need to complete the required annual or periodic assessment to remain current.
The assessment day begins at the harbour training base with registration, safety briefings and an overview of any current SLSGB protocol updates or procedural changes. Candidates then move into the practical assessment elements, which are designed to confirm continued competency across the core areas of beach and surf lifeguarding.
Throughout the day, candidates complete timed swim and fitness tests alongside practical rescue assessments involving board rescues, tube rescues, casualty handling and spinal injury management. First aid competency is also reassessed, including adult, child and baby resuscitation procedures alongside choking management and emergency response scenarios. The course focuses on maintaining professional standards while ensuring candidates remain operationally capable within real beach environments.
Assessment activities take place across both classroom and beach settings depending on sea conditions. Instructors and assessors guide candidates through the required evaluation elements while ensuring all SLSGB standards are met. Returning to the harbour base between sessions, candidates have access to changing facilities, classrooms and refreshments throughout the day.

The flexibility of nearby beaches and sheltered harbour areas also helps instructors adapt training locations depending on weather and sea state during the assessment day.
Candidates must hold valid SLSGB membership and possess an in-date SLSGB Beach Lifeguard qualification before attending the assessment.
Participants should remain confident within surf zone conditions and must successfully complete the required timed 400m swim assessment for either Surf or Beach Lifeguard endorsement.
Using years of operational lifeguarding and rescue experience, the instructor team focuses on delivering realistic assessments aligned with current SLSGB requirements. Practical coastal environments and professional facilities help create an assessment process that reflects genuine working conditions faced by beach lifeguards.

We had the most amazing time paddle boarding with our instructor Freddie. She was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and made sure each one of our group had an incredible time. Would 100% recommend and will definitely be revisiting on our next holiday to Newquay.
