What is SLSGB?
Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) trains and certifies beach lifeguards, surf lifesavers and first aiders for coastal environments. Its awards combine fitness, rescue technique, casualty care and knowledge of tides, surf and beach hazards.
SLSGB qualifications are widely used by surf schools, beach operators and voluntary lifesaving clubs. Courses are practical and physically demanding, with assessment in real or simulated beach conditions rather than classroom theory alone.

Choosing a course
Beach lifeguard awards expect strong swimming and surf fitness. If you are new to open-water rescue, ask the centre about preparatory training or surf fitness requirements before you book. NVBL and Surf Lifeguard pathways differ in depth and employment use, so match the course to whether you need a club award or a vocational beach licence.
Centres set course dates around tide and weather windows. Check what is included: wetsuits, exam fees, pool sessions and beach days vary. Leave a comment when you book if you need the qualification for a specific employer or season start date.
Official standards
Course standards and award criteria are published by SLSGB at slsgb.org.uk. adventuro listings show where you can book; your training centre confirms prerequisites, fitness tests and assessment format when you book.
