What to Expect

Over the two days, the course will guide children through the fundamentals of sailing. The focus will be on learning how to launch and recover the boat, how to steer, and how to sail across the wind. They'll also become familiar with the various parts of the boat, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to take on more advanced sailing skills in the future. The sessions are practical, with lots of hands-on learning and opportunities to practice in a supportive environment.

The course is designed with beginners in mind, so there’s no need for prior sailing experience. Each child will have the chance to build their skills progressively throughout the course. The emphasis is on making the learning fun while ensuring safety on the water, with trained instructors offering expert guidance.

Location

The course takes place at Aztec Adventure Upton Warren, a well-equipped venue situated in Worcestershire. The centre provides excellent facilities for water-based activities, with a designated viewing area for parents and spectators to watch the children from The Boat Shack Cafe/terrace.

There are parking spaces available for participants, including designated disabled parking, and a nearby overflow car park in Webb’s Garden Centre.

Prerequisites

Participants must be aged between 8 and 15 years and must be confident in the water. Although prior sailing experience is not required, all children should have a basic level of fitness to handle the activities.

Appropriate clothing for water-based activities is essential, including old trainers or wetsuit boots, weather-appropriate clothing, and a spare change of clothes.

Domande frequenti:

What is the age range for this course?

The course is designed for children aged 8 to 15 years.

This ensures the lessons and activities are tailored to their developmental and learning needs, helping them grasp basic sailing principles in a fun and safe environment.

Do children need any prior sailing experience?

No prior sailing experience is required. The course is intended for beginners, providing a solid introduction to sailing, covering everything from the basics of boat parts to how to sail across the wind.

All children will start with a clean slate, and instructors will guide them through each skill at their own pace.

What should my child bring to the course?

Children should bring weather-appropriate clothing, a packed lunch, water bottle, spare clothes, and a towel. Footwear must be suitable for water-based activities, such as old trainers or wetsuit boots.

It's also a good idea to pack a hat (either sun or warm) and sun cream, as well as waterproofs if the weather requires it.

Is there parking available at the venue?

Yes, there is free parking available at Upton Warren for all customers. Two car parks are located near the entrance, with designated disabled parking spaces in the car park closest to the main building.

Additional parking can be found at Webb’s Garden Centre overflow car park across the road, with whom we have an agreement.

Can parents watch the course while it’s running?

Yes, parents and spectators are welcome to watch the children during the course.

There is a designated viewing area at The Boat Shack/terrace where you can observe the lessons, but we ask that you keep the number of spectators to a minimum to ensure safety and space for everyone.

What are the course timings?

The course runs for two days, from 09:30 to 16:00 each day.

Please arrive by 09:15 for check-in, as this will allow enough time to prepare and start the day’s activities on time.

Will my child receive a certificate at the end of the course?

Yes, children who successfully complete the course will receive an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Logbook and a certificate to recognise their achievement.

This will detail the skills they have learned during the course.

What is the maximum group size for the course?

Group sizes are kept small, with a maximum of 6 participants per instructor and no more than 9 people in total. This setup allows for close guidance throughout the session, ensures plenty of hands-on time in the craft, and makes it easier to practise manoeuvres safely under supervision.

What happens if it rains during my session?

Rain does not affect your session; you will still be able to take part. Since you will get wet anyway, it can even be more fun in the rain!

If the weather becomes unsafe, such as lightning or thunder, the session will pause until conditions improve. You’ll be given options to rebook or request a refund if a session is cancelled.

Should Aztec Adventure Ltd, for reasons beyond their control (including high winds, lightning storms and icy conditions*), feel it is necessary to close the activity once your party have already commenced participation, you will be offered alternative activities, times or dates to return within one year and rescheduled free of charge.

Alternatively, you may opt to receive a gift card for the full value of your booking, which can be used to rebook at a date and time that suits your group within 12 months.

In such circumstances, you will not be entitled to a refund, in part or whole.

*In all other weather conditions, we operate as normal and standard conditions apply.
