What is AIDA?

The International Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA) is the leading international body for freediving education and competitive disciplines. Its course structure runs from introductory pool sessions through numbered freediver grades, with clear performance requirements for static apnea, dynamic swimming and constant weight depth dives.

AIDA certifications are recognised at freediving schools worldwide. Training combines theory on breathing, equalisation and safety with coached water sessions. Depth limits, buddy rules and medical fitness requirements are set centrally; centres adapt scheduling, sites and coaching style to local conditions.

Choosing a course

Start with honest swimming fitness and comfort in the water. AIDA 1 is an introduction; AIDA 2 is the first full certification with depth and performance targets. If you hold a card from another agency, leave a comment when you book so the centre can advise on crossover or evaluation dives.

Freediving courses are sensitive to weather, visibility and student readiness. Centres may spread sessions across several days or reschedule open-water blocks. Compare what is included: pool hire, boat costs, equipment rental and any compulsory first-aid prerequisites for higher grades.
