Gain the qualifications to lead your own sessions with this hands-on Paddlesports Instructor course. Over two days, you'll build the skills and confidence needed to work with beginners in very sheltered water across canoeing, kayaking, and SUP. Designed for aspiring coaches, this course is ideal for anyone ready to take the first step into paddlesport instruction.
This two-day course combines both training and assessment, focusing on practical skills that can be applied immediately in real teaching scenarios. The sessions are designed around creating enjoyable, safe, and educational experiences for new paddlers. You'll learn how to manage group sessions, make use of the local environment, and deliver engaging activities in a variety of craft—canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.
Expect to spend plenty of time on the water, working through hands-on tasks and practising key instructor responsibilities such as briefing, equipment checks, safety supervision, and session delivery. You'll be introduced to various coaching techniques tailored for beginners, and there will be opportunities to demonstrate your ability to respond to changing situations and maintain a safe paddling environment. By the end of the course, successful candidates will be able to lead introductory sessions confidently and independently within the scope of sheltered water paddlesport instruction.
Courses take place in West London, with sheltered water venues chosen for their suitability for beginner paddling and coaching. These locations provide calm, controlled environments that are ideal for practising instructional techniques and group management.
Easily accessible by public transport or car, the venue has essential facilities nearby and a peaceful setting that helps learners focus on gaining practical experience without distractions.
You must hold either the Paddlesport Safety and Rescue or Foundation Safety and Rescue training before attending this course. These can be completed separately and are required to ensure that all candidates have a solid understanding of on-water safety protocols.
In addition, you’ll need full membership with a recognised national paddlesports association such as Paddle UK. A current 8-hour first aid certificate is also strongly recommended, although not mandatory for attending the course.
The coaching team is led by an experienced paddlesports coach with years of involvement in both recreational and competitive paddling, including work with GB Freestyle. The centre was established with a strong focus on sharing expert knowledge in a clear, supportive, and enjoyable way.
Sessions are designed to be small and personal, ensuring you receive focused feedback and real development throughout the course. Whether you're just starting out or looking to build a career in coaching, the team prides itself on creating a welcoming, professional environment where people feel supported as they gain valuable skills.
