Following one of Morocco's most unusual adventure routes, this road trip combines scenic driving, mountain hiking and lakeside camping while travelling from Fes to Marrakech. Visiting six beautiful lakes spread across the Middle Atlas and High Atlas Mountains, the journey showcases landscapes rarely included on traditional Morocco itineraries.
Designed for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, the experience balances relaxed drives with rewarding hikes, peaceful campsites and authentic encounters with Amazigh communities. Each lake offers its own character, from peaceful forest settings to high-altitude mountain scenery, creating a varied adventure that changes every day.
Rather than focusing on Morocco's well-known cities, this itinerary has been carefully designed to reveal some of the country's hidden natural landscapes. Travelling with an experienced local guide allows you to discover places that are rarely visited while enjoying the comfort of organised transport, camping equipment and full logistical support.
Camping beside remote lakes, sharing freshly prepared meals outdoors and exploring the mountains on foot creates an experience that combines adventure with genuine connection to Morocco's natural environment.
Your journey begins in Fes, where you'll be collected from your accommodation before travelling into the Middle Atlas Mountains towards Aguelmam Azigza. Surrounded by cedar forests, this peaceful lake provides the perfect introduction to the adventure.
After setting up camp, there is time to enjoy the surroundings, take a short walk, swim during the warmer months or simply relax beside the water before your first night under the stars.
Leaving camp behind, a scenic drive through forest landscapes leads to the twin Tiguelmamine Lakes. These quieter lakes receive relatively few visitors, making them an excellent place to enjoy peaceful hiking, swimming or photography.
Another evening is spent camping beside the lakes while enjoying freshly prepared meals in the heart of nature.
Today's route heads towards Imilchil, where two of Morocco's most famous mountain lakes await. After stopping at Lake Tislit, you'll continue along an off-road track to the more secluded Lake Isli, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
The drive passes traditional Amazigh villages and beautiful valleys before another memorable night of camping beside the lake.
Travelling south through the Atlas Mountains, you'll pass the spectacular Todgha Gorges, where there is time to stop for lunch and admire the towering canyon walls before continuing towards Ouarzazate.
Instead of camping, tonight is spent in a comfortable ecolodge, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy a hot shower and a relaxing evening before returning to the mountains.
Leaving Ouarzazate, the journey returns to the High Atlas Mountains in search of two of Morocco's most remote lakes. At Lake Tamda, a mule carries the camping equipment while you complete a rewarding hike through the Ounilla Valley to reach the campsite.
The following day continues towards Lake Ifni, one of Morocco's highest mountain lakes within Toubkal National Park. Another scenic hike leads to the lakeside campsite, surrounded by impressive mountain scenery and some of the country's finest high-altitude landscapes.
Most nights are spent camping beside Morocco's beautiful mountain lakes, allowing you to experience peaceful evenings beneath clear skies far from busy towns and cities. Comfortable shared tents and camping equipment are provided throughout the journey.
One night is included in an ecolodge near Ouarzazate, offering a comfortable break with proper facilities before continuing the final section of the camping adventure.
Although much of the journey is completed by vehicle, several days include rewarding hikes to remote lakes and scenic viewpoints. Most walks are suitable for reasonably active travellers and are completed at a relaxed pace with regular breaks.
The itinerary offers an enjoyable balance between driving, hiking and time to relax beside the lakes, making it suitable for people looking for a varied outdoor adventure rather than a demanding trekking expedition.
The itinerary includes Aguelmam Azigza, the Tiguelmamine Lakes, Lake Tislit, Lake Isli, Lake Tamda and Lake Ifni. Each lake has its own character, from forest surroundings to remote mountain scenery and high-altitude landscapes.
Together they provide an excellent introduction to Morocco's lesser-known natural attractions, many of which receive far fewer visitors than the country's cities and desert regions.
Swimming is possible in several of the lakes during the warmer months, particularly throughout summer when water temperatures are more comfortable.
Your guide will advise which lakes are suitable depending on weather conditions and the time of year.
Some of the lakes visited during the tour are popular with local anglers, particularly Lake Tamda, where fishing opportunities are available.
Guests wishing to fish should bring their own equipment and check local regulations with the guide before starting.
Camping forms a major part of the adventure, with nights spent beside peaceful mountain lakes in carefully selected locations. Shared tents, foam mattresses and camping equipment are provided, while freshly prepared meals are cooked by the accompanying support team.
Camping beside the lakes allows you to experience beautiful sunsets, clear night skies and quiet mornings surrounded by nature.
After several nights of camping, the ecolodge near Ouarzazate provides a comfortable opportunity to enjoy proper facilities, a hot shower and a restful night's sleep before continuing into the High Atlas.
This break adds comfort to the itinerary while maintaining the adventure-focused nature of the tour.
Yes. On the hiking sections to Lakes Tamda and Ifni, mules transport the camping equipment, allowing you to walk with only a lightweight daypack containing your daily essentials.
This makes the mountain walks considerably more comfortable while still allowing you to enjoy the experience of reaching these remote lakes on foot.
