Cross the High Atlas on one of Morocco's most scenic drives to reach Ouarzazate, often called the Hollywood of Africa, then finish at Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified clay ksar seen in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. The day is built for history, architecture and a proper kasbah hike.
We'll start early and climb the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, at 2,260 metres the highest road in the High Atlas, with stops at viewpoints and traditional tea houses. In Ouarzazate you visit Kasbah Taourirt, a restored 19th-century kasbah, and pass the Atlas Film Studios, one of the largest studio complexes in the world.
The afternoon belongs to Ait Ben Haddou. You'll hike through its narrow lanes and up toward the granary at the top, with sweeping views over the Ounila valley, before the evening drive back to Marrakech over the same mountain pass.
Ouarzazate sits on the southern side of the High Atlas, reached via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, roughly halfway between Marrakech and the Sahara. Ait Ben Haddou is a short drive further, a striking example of earthen architecture beside the river.
The road itself is part of the experience, with mountain villages, valleys and, in season, snow on the higher peaks. Because the distances are long, we keep an early start so you still have proper time on foot at the ksar.
The hike at Ait Ben Haddou uses uneven, sometimes steep paths, so sturdy footwear is important. You do not need mountain fitness, though you should be comfortable walking for a stretch after several hours in the vehicle.
