Featuring a rewarding mix of mountain landscapes and cultural encounters, this trek explores one of the most scenic regions of Morocco's Central High Atlas. Beginning in the beautiful Ait Bouguemez Valley, the route follows rivers, fertile farmland, narrow gorges and traditional Amazigh villages before finishing near Boutaghrar.
Rather than focusing on reaching a summit, this itinerary is designed to showcase the diversity of the M'Goun region. Daily walks of around five to seven hours provide plenty of opportunities to experience village life, enjoy peaceful mountain scenery and discover remote valleys that remain largely untouched by tourism.
Delivering a balanced combination of adventure and cultural discovery, this route has been carefully designed for walkers wanting to experience the High Atlas beyond its highest summits. The itinerary follows traditional village paths and ancient trading routes, allowing you to appreciate both the natural beauty and the local way of life.
Experienced CFAMM-certified mountain guides, muleteers and cooks accompany every departure, ensuring the journey runs smoothly from beginning to end. With luggage transported by mules and meals prepared each day, you can concentrate on enjoying the walking and the changing landscapes.
Leaving Marrakech in the morning, you'll travel through the Central High Atlas towards the beautiful Ait Bouguemez Valley, often known as the Happy Valley. The scenic drive takes around six hours and passes changing mountain landscapes before arriving in the valley.
After being welcomed with traditional mint tea, you'll have time to enjoy a relaxed walk through the surrounding fields and villages before spending the evening with a local family, providing an authentic introduction to Amazigh hospitality.
The trekking begins with a steady climb towards the Ait Imi Pass at approximately 2,900 metres. After reaching the summit, wide panoramic views stretch across the surrounding High Atlas before the trail descends into the Ouzighimt Valley.
Passing a series of traditional Amazigh villages, the route eventually reaches Tighremt N'Ait Hamed after around six and a half hours of walking, where camp is prepared for the evening.
Today's walk follows the Ouzighimt Valley alongside the river, passing villages where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Along the way you'll see cultivated fields, fruit trees and local farming communities before stopping for lunch near Taghraft.
The afternoon continues to Imi N'Irkt, where another peaceful campsite awaits after approximately five and a half hours of trekking.
This stage follows the river through the impressive M'Goun Gorges, crossing the water several times along the way. During the warmer months, the cool river provides a refreshing contrast to the surrounding mountain scenery.
Lunch and traditional mint tea are enjoyed near the Ifasfas spring before continuing towards Tighanimine, where the group spends another evening camping beside the mountains.
Today's route passes orchards filled with walnut, apple and fig trees before reaching the Boutaghrar Valley. The walk combines cultivated farmland with mountain scenery, highlighting the close relationship between the local communities and the surrounding landscape.
Following lunch near Tamgalouna village, the final section continues to the evening campsite after approximately five and a half hours of walking.
Accommodation combines traditional hospitality with well-equipped camping throughout the trek. The first evening is spent in a family home within Ait Bouguemez before moving into spacious shared tents for the remainder of the hiking adventure.
Camping equipment, foam mattresses and kitchen facilities are provided by the support team, allowing you to enjoy comfortable overnight stops in peaceful mountain settings surrounded by the High Atlas landscape.
Yes. Unlike the Mount M'Goun summit expedition, this itinerary focuses on exploring the valleys, villages and gorges rather than reaching the highest peak. It is ideal for walkers who enjoy spending several days in the mountains without tackling a demanding summit ascent.
Although there are mountain passes to cross and daily walks of up to seven hours, the emphasis is on experiencing the landscapes, local communities and natural surroundings rather than achieving a specific mountain objective.
The overall difficulty is considered moderate, although good fitness is still recommended because of the consecutive walking days and occasional long ascents. Most days involve between five and seven hours on mountain trails with a mixture of climbs, descents and river crossings.
The route follows traditional footpaths used by local communities, so the terrain varies considerably throughout the week, keeping each day's walking interesting and rewarding.
The M'Goun Gorges are among the highlights of the trek, with towering rock walls, flowing rivers and sections where the trail follows directly through the water. During warmer months, walking through the cool river is often one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey.
The constantly changing scenery provides an excellent contrast to the surrounding mountain passes and open valleys, making the route feel varied from beginning to end.
Yes. One of the defining features of this trek is the opportunity to travel through traditional Amazigh villages where farming, livestock and local customs remain central to everyday life. You'll see terraced fields, orchards and stone-built villages throughout the route.
Your guide will also explain local traditions, history and culture, helping you understand how these mountain communities have adapted to life in the High Atlas over many generations.
The first night is spent with a local family in Ait Bouguemez, giving you the opportunity to experience genuine Amazigh hospitality before the trekking begins. The remaining nights are spent camping in carefully selected mountain locations.
Shared tents, foam mattresses and camp facilities are provided, while the support team prepares meals and sets up camp before your arrival each afternoon.
Several sections of the route involve crossing rivers, particularly while travelling through the M'Goun Gorges. During the trekking season these crossings are normally straightforward, although your feet may get wet depending on water levels.
Your guide will always choose the safest crossing points and provide assistance whenever necessary, ensuring the group crosses comfortably.
The recommended season runs from May until October, when weather conditions are generally stable and river levels are suitable for trekking. Spring brings green valleys and wildflowers, while autumn offers pleasant temperatures for walking.
Outside these months, changing weather and colder conditions can make sections of the route less suitable for multi-day trekking.
